Sometimes a restaurant will add an automatic 18% or so for a tip. If the service is excellent or to a 'regular' wait person I'll usually add another 5%

My wife and I do 20% (plus), or 15% if service is only average. I always leave something because some wait staff are at the mercy of the kitchen help, so I don't blame "the messenger."

Tipping has been a hot topic of conversation where I work. People were really irritated when tip jars started appearing at Dunkins, Subway, and the pickup window of pizza joints. I always tip for sit-down meals but cafeteria style, DIY places - no. Dining or lunching out at a nice place is a luxury that I can budget for. But if I had to start adding a 15-20% tip for every cup of coffee or egg sandwich, I'd have to stop eating out entirely!
As some of you may have read in one of my previous posts I mentioned I may be opening up a diner somewhere in New Hampshire.

When I dine out and the service is good most of the time I will Tip about 20% of the bill or even more when I feel the service is exceptional. If the service is poor I will then tip about 10% to 15%.

However, when I stop by Starbucks, and I see that little can that says Tips I am in total revulsion! I do not ever Tip at Starbucks and truly feel they have such Nerve or as they say in Yiddish "Chutzpeh!"
Considering on how expensive a Grande' latte' is like $3.60 or so Am I being unreasonable? Am I the only one who does not Tip at Starbucks? Please help me out! What do you Tip at restaurants vs. Starbucks?

YEAH, I AGREE WITH YOU 100% I tip according to service. those people don't make thier living off tips like a waitress does. I noticed the samething at dunkin donuts. i don't put anything in those tip cups.

We usually tip about 20% at sit-down places, less if there were .. problems.

No way will I put anything in a tip jar on the counter.

At a buffet, or some place where they at least bring me my food on a tray (even if I had to order it at the cash register), we tip 10% because they at least have to buss the table and/or walk the food over.

Talking Hello "COMET"!!

THANK YOU "COMET" FOR THIS THREAD & LINK!

I have gotten used to that wherever I go, you are expected to TIP.

If I get my hair cut, the girl that washes it, the one that styles it, the one

that walks me over to get it styled It just seems that anyone that

you come in contact with, is expecting a TIP. It has become a normal thing

to do........Pretty soon, if you pump your own gas, the cashier inside the

station is going to have a JAR with TIPS Or maybe that is

already taking place and I am not aware of it LOL!

So, when you open up the DINER, if I go in it with you "COMET" I am

expecting to get a TIP as well, from all of our customers LOL! Just

kidding LOL!

Take care,

Have a great day everyone,

Countrylv22

You are certainly correct Countrylv22 about this new tipping mania. Like today I was at the dentist's office and I was worried he may want a tip!

But it goes beyond tipping to where we have created an entitlement society, whereas every time you do something many now expect a warm fuzzy with a tip. Pretty soon the telephone operator will want a tip!

Take for example all these graduations, Preschool, Kindergarten, Elementary School, Junior High and so on! When I was a child it was only for High School and College! But today it is everybody!

And what about if you go to a hotel! You have to tip everyone and more if you gamble!

But in the Red & Blue Diner, the sign will say. Tip only for good service!!!

Thanks so much Countrylv22! Hope all is well with you!

With Gas & Food Prices going up it seems like everyone is trying to find more creative ways to make extra income. I could just see, our public officials will expect tips for every service they perform. I still have a difficult time tipping at Starbucks.

This whole thread is reminding me of the scene in Reservoir Dogs in which Mr. Pink rants about tipping at the diner....hahahahaaa....
Sorry for the meaningless off topic reference, I couldn't help myself.
