Does Mike Sylvia's proposal have any chance at all? I'd like to hear from those who know your state well enough to gauge the interest in seceding from the nation.

Sylvia is an ass. He's a racist bigot and a Free Stater whose spouting off doesn't reflect the beliefs of a majority of NH residents. He's also wildly impractical and ignorant of US History. How well did secession work the last time a bunch of states tried it, and what did they have left after they failed? Yeah, let's all sign up for a lost cause like that and see how fast we can bankrupt the state trying to accomplish it.

Vermont managed being independent for 14 years. NH would be better off than VT was having ocean access. I fully support this. I'd push for Essex County in VT to join NH if it ever happened.

It's not 1860 anymore. Secession is not about keeping people enslaved in this case but instead bringing more freedom. Modern nations have voted on this subject with no threat of violence. Quebec, Scotland, Czechoslovakia ( which did in fact split up peacefully). No one in NH is proposing to start a war. The CSA fired on US troops first. No one is going to do that in NH.

Those were both long-lived experiments, weren't they? Neither involved secession from the US. Vermont declared its independence from Great Britain and New York before the US even existed. The ISR resulted from a border dispute between the US and Canada and unclear title to the ISR land.

Who said anything about shooting? It's not 1860 anymore. Today the pressure is always economic. The US is never going to allow any state to secede. And what do you envision happening anyway? The same thing that happened with COVID, but many times worse. We'd be flooded with disgruntled WFH out-of-staters, (unless the state police are going to close our borders), and we wouldn't have enough food or textile mills (ironic, yes?) or raw materials for manufacturing. No food, clothing, or shelter and not enough money to buy them anyway. The out-of-staters would drive up the price of real estate and everything else until all current NH residents would have to move to Maine. Look at the recent people on this forum with the budgets to buy a $500K - $3M home. NH would look like NJ. Is that what you want? Or are you in some fantasy land where as long you have concealed carry and the right to build whatever you want on your own property, then life is dandy? You only get those things until you're outvoted by your rich neighbors who are salivating over your ten acres.

Only half kidding here. Be careful what you wish for. The economic landscape will be a lot different with a hugely divided 2-class system, and that may lead to actual shooting.

P.S. The breakups of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Sudan were hardly without violence. And you may want to look at the UK's food supply issues post-Brexit.

I'm in Sylvia's area, so I don't know him. It's idiotic things like Sylvia's current time waster, which is still only in LSR form, that gives the free state project a bad name. The liberals on reddit love screeching about the free state project.

While I'm not in their club, their general ideals are leave people alone, limit government to essentials, and follow the Constitution. With a bit of refinement, that isn't a horrible base.

Since the vitriol here is coming from one poster, I'm sure KCZ will come with sources on the "racist bigot" claim. TBH, I roll my eyes every time the "r" word comes out. It's 2021, you'll get called a racist for going to the Post Office on a Wednesday.

No vitriol except at idiots like Sylvia...I agree that he's a time waster, and I'd add agitator, rather than a serious politician that we can count on to actually work toward solving problems. He denies being racist but says we should take advantage of other people's racism to further his goal of secession.

Quote:
"... the atmosphere out there is that those dirty Mexicans or Guatemalans or whatever are coming across the border bringing in Covid with them... And whether or not it’s true and real, you know, if we could take advantage of it, why wouldn’t we?”
Quote:
New Hampshire House Speaker Sherman Packard put out a statement. “Employing racial stereotypes for any purpose is wrong, shameful and will never gain Republican support,” Packard said. “Secession is not something House Republican leadership is even remotely involved with, nor do we condone racial stereotyping of any kind.”

Thanks for the link. Did you watch the video where he said that. They provide the time hack in the article. I recommend you do and see what he said immediately before that.

Now as to others he mentioned in there, he also mentioned "Ridley". Ridley is one of those absolute extreme "journalists" that follow these folks. He was big with the "bitcoin six", "bitcoin ghandi", using BLM tactics by "protesting" at peoples houses, etc.

So association with Ridley and his idiocy on this independence bill request is enough to make me not like him. A cherrypicked comment in a video where he clearly says he doesn't feel that way, is not enough for me to label him a "racist bigot".

I heard/read the whole thing. He said it, he denied he believed it, then he said he could use it to his advantage. That's enough for me to call him a racist. At the very least, his agenda is racist.
