Also with no where the number of tourists there. roughly, its 20 miles wide, 40 miles long and an all cruise to go to the other end of the lake, 100 miles to drive the perimeter on fairly good logging roads.
The sad news it's 5 1/2 hours, 294 miles from Sunapee . People are far more relaxed there, since there are not lines of everybody waiting for everything. Its remote location helps keep it secret. Best of all the Maine forrest service maintains the many old fishing guide camps for free camping. (thats free! is there anything you can still get for free anymore?Sure! you're welcome to set up camp in such a beautiful place and squat for up to 14 days.)far more beautiful than any campsite I ever paid money to borrow!

My family has a bit of history with that area. My grandfather was a RR engineer who drove the train from Boston to Greenville Junction. He would pick up the sports on Fri.morning and they would be in Greenville by the next morning. When he died, his wish was to be buried in the woods of Seboomok. This is at the north end of Moosehead Lake. He was cremated and his ashes were placed in a galvinized baitbox by a logger who buried it on a little knoll overlooking Seboomok Lake. This was in 1946. My family lost track of the location until about 25 yrs. ago when I started looking for it and found the grave of my grandfather. It was a simple wooden cross on a ring of white quartz rocks. Now I go every year to clean up the grave. I'm still the only one in my family that goes there although non-family members also tend to the grave. Possibly out of respect for an era long gone and wished for now.
