In a word....no. If you are burning wood, there will be some smell and the release of smoke at times. When feeding the stove, the door has to be open, so there can be a release of some smoke. If it is set up properly, the smoke can be minimal, but it will still happen. You also have to remember that you will have soot build-up on the walls and ceiling, and you have to stack the wood somewhere and with that comes a bit of a mess along with occasional insects. Just telling it like it is! I've had wood stoves my whole life, so just be forwarned; it's not that cut-and-dry simple!!

You may be better off getting a gas insert if you just want ambiance and some additional heating source. No mess, easy maintanence, and will provide the heat, etc. you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Yes, but aren't those problems kept to pretty much a minimum if you're using a wood-pellet stove?

Thanks bryfry. Don't want that situation. Someone asked if the pellet type stove is less messy. What do you think??
