Let's call a spade a spade and admit that the state is taking a back-door approach and instituting an income tax. On top of all these new taxes, we are also increasing the tobacco tax by 35 cents and the rooms and meals tax by .75 percent.

these taxes on your income are called "revenue enhancements."

cut the budget already.....and let's put in a casino! time for some real revenue!
A tax on interest and dividends is nuts. That is not a tax for the rich. It is a tax for anyone who is trying to build a future nest egg, and it's also a tax on seniors who are more likely to have interest bearing accounts (like CDs). Building personal savings is a good idea, and placing your money in an interest bearing account is the only way to keep ahead of inflation.

I was also wondering about the Free State Project. I think the plan may have fizzled a bit due to the economy. How many people can uproot their families and move to NH without a job lined up? How easy is it to find a job up there before you make the move?

So you are proposing an immoral society with no ethics? I think supporting special interest groups is just as wrong as excessive regulation. You want to smoke pot and be a homosexual, fine by me until you promote legislation pushing your personal accomodations onto society. Political promotion of these and other ridiculous freedoms are as hideous as endless regulations
I don't think any of those freedoms are ridiculous. I think they are basic common sense....allowing an adult to live their life as they see fit, as it has no effect on others. Allowing them is not "promoting" them anymore than allowing free speech is "promoting" the speaker's ideology (whomever the speaker may be). I can be discreet about smoking pot or be gay and wish for equal rights but as it stands now both are illegal....so "discreetness" is a moot point.

The problem arises when people think their specific "moral or ethical" code is the only correct one and feel they need to enforce that on other adults. THAT is the greatest disservice to to a free society. Live your life according to your moral code as long as it does not affect me....all I ask is that you let me do the same.

you think only the rich should pay taxes? I have no objection to paying my fair share, and a tax on only interest & dividends isn't that bad (considering it's leaving pensions and salaries alone). 'Fair' being the operative word. I don't object to paying some, an organization needs some capital to do it's job, I do object when they put in a bleeder valve into my bank account and tap it for all and sundry!

That is exactly how I feel. Only I believe that people should take personal responsibility for social and other consequences of their lifestyle choices rather than to impose their choices on the majority.

And I believe that yes, we are all affected when the gov't. gets involved. A free society depends on the majority making the right moral choices. There are virtues, traditions and principals which are keys to personal and societal success (check statistics on how two parent families affect crime and poverty rates for example).

The more libertine society becomes, the more laws and regulations are needed to govern behavior. Unecessary hate crime laws come to mind. (again, make your choices and deal w/the consequences personally and I will respect you regardless of what your choices are) The more people live hedonistically, the more $$ social programs will be called for to help them pick up the pieces. It is idealogical and not realistic to assume that there is no fallout, and we become collectivists rather than individualists when a minority's problems become everyone's. The liberal agendas of increasing gov't and undermining virtue are obviously connected and the removal of virtue leads directly to bigger government.

One only needs to become part of a society of urban families first hand to understand the reality of the wake left by the socially liberal and unecessarily pay the price created by that society (which in most cases is used for any number of unrelated agendas) in order to believe how this mindset feeds corruption and big government.

NH was and should be everything Mass. is not. The idea that everything needs to be taxed, and regulated is just socialism. If you want to live like that go to Mass. - it's just to the south of here. If you want a government that is an industry and needs to be fed from the public trough go south of here. If the electeds in Concord want to back door taxes on to you - vote them out at the first opportunity. The motto on the NH license plate says it all. If you come with an agenda to push your beliefs on other people - no matter what those issues are - stay where you are.

Thumbs up We need to take back America and begin here with New Hampshire

The Free State Project does have a very freedom loving theme. We in NH must overcome the oppressive socialist burdens placed upon us from the Mass Liberals, NY Liberals and even Calif Liberals!

Do you realize that our nation could have no more than 3% max unemployment if Legal American Citizens were to be given the work that 20 million illegal aliens are doing? Even our kids are being denied good hard work because of illegal alien workers.

I Hope Free State Project members will add an initiative to document all these jobs illegals have and redistribute them to legal citizens! One way of doing this would be to dismantle all social & welfare programs. As John Smith said, those who do not work will not eat!

Do you really think those minimum wage positions are going to make for a comfortable living? Do you really want your kids picking fruit in a field somewhere or do you want them in a decent paying job that requires an education and provides a benefit to the country.

The government should stop some of the handouts. But those who call for that were probably the first on line for the Cash for Clunkers or a mortgage bailout.

The 20 million number seems somewhat inflated by the way.

All in all the project never got off the ground although their intentions were good. Unfortunatly I'm met a few who moved in and started demanding changes to the current system. Somewhat like "I'm here. Now change".

As far as the tax on Dividend and Interest, what doe the state plan on using for a revenue source? Lost that tax and you will have a income or sales tax. The state can't run on sunshine and happy thoughts.

The biggest handout the government should stop is, unfortunately, at the Federal level. That handout is the Military contractor’s excessive charges for materials, weapons and services.

I agree with the NH tax should have a base deductable equal to the mean income. Most people can live fairly well on the mean income and I believe they should not have to pay taxes on the income. This should apply to federal as well as State Taxes. The gambling tax should also have a deductable equal to 10 times the mean income. After all why should anyone pay the voluntary education tax except for a big payout.

What sort of decent paying jobs are there for kids that require an education and provide a benefit to the country? When I was a kid, picking summer crops at the local farm provided teenagers with jobs, and yes, it was good enough for us. We were outside, working hard and being paid for our time. Not much, but earning our own $$ instead of relying on parents to hand it to us helped to create a good work ethic. Something that seems to be in less supply these days...

Absolutely! Up here the farms that I frequent have American kids working on them-picking fruit and vegetables. They are kids in hs and college working hard to earn $$ to pay for their education and other expenses. None of these kids find this honest work beneath them and neither do their parents. When I was a kid in NJ, I worked on our relatives farm picking vegetables as well as tending to animals etc. My parents had no problem with me doing this and I don't understand why any parent would be against their kid doing this type of work to help pay for school or expenses.
