I've pulled ticks off my dog before. Quite a feat for a former 'somewhat city slicker.' But you live in a rural place you learn to adapt. We had ticks 'where I used to live' despite it being quite suburban. My sister & her family live near a nature preserve in NY and they get ticks and other pests all the time.
As for here...well, yes, you can get them.
I've seen them in the shower after my husband has been in there. (my husband tends to romp with the dog in the high grass).
The dog gets her flea/tick medicine from March-November and it's been good for us so far.
It's on the rise as it is "on the rise" all over the country. It's not because Lyme itself is more prevalent, but because diagnoses are increasing. Why are diagnoses increasing? It's the new auto-immune catch-all diagnosis for very vague symptoms with multiple potential causes. Most Lyme disease diagnoses are made from clinical findings (vague symptoms with a variety of potential causes) and the fact that someone once lived in an area where Lyme was present. Lo and behold, deer are pretty much everywhere except major cities. So, do you have general aches and pains, sore joints, and feel tired? Did you once live in a rural or suburban area? Blamo!
