The closest you are going to get to Maryland while still being able to take a direct train into Philly is going to be Camden County along the PATCO line. Towns like Collingswood, Haddon Twp., Haddonfield, some sections of Cherry Hill and Voorhees. These towns also have relatively easy access to 295 to get you down towards Maryland. You'd be about 30 minutes from the Delaware Memorial Bridge and then however long it would take you to get to your destination in Maryland from there.
I am +1 for Delaware. The cost of living is not bad. You have a regional rail line to Philly and MD is next door. If you like to live in South Jersey you have limited options for public transportation to Philadelphia and you will have to go through Delaware to reach Maryland.
I lived in voorhees when I regularly visited my Sis in md. It's close to lindenwold station which goes to philly and near penn station. It's also right off 295.
It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to the Maryland state line at Elkton from the Deptford/Bellmawr area of South Jersey. It is also a 10-15 minute drive to Center City Philadelphia. About 20 minutes on the PATCO train.
If you regularly need to commute to Philadelphia, and also need to be close to Maryland, try Delaware. The SEPTA runs as far south as Newark. It takes a lot longer to get into Philly from Delaware, though, so South Jersey may make more sense if you are only traveling to MD occasionally.
What is the nicest, safest places to live in South Jersey that are a train ride from Philadelphia and close to Maryland.
Funny thing is delaware has lower taxes and probably no sales tax yet still has money to improve it's bus system.
