Running thru Woodbury and then down along the center median of Route 55 as far south as Millville. The goal was to develop deep southern New Jersey as a commuter suburb of Philly.

in the old days they were all connected by camden I believe, from there you took a ferry. of course a lot of the employment in both cities was on or near the waterfront for a long time. while the PA side got a small but relatively functional commuter rail system (regional rail) NJ got PATCO and the AC line. I think millville was one of these defunct commuter lines. the AC line uses the former seashore lines which I believe was less for commuting than leisure connections. cape may has been a destination for philadelphians since before there was a US
A really long time ago, it was the most efficient way to get from town to town. The trains moved everything, including the mail.
Yes today they are only the most efficient when they aggregate people and connect them to big cities. Interestingly ups and fedex move a lot of parcels by rail only the post office doesn't. Always three decades behind
