Former site of a Nike missile defense base in Holmdel, New Jersey
These photos were taken on the site of a former Nike missile defense base which once protected the New York area from potential aerial attacks. The site is located off Telegraph Hill Road in Holmdel, New Jersey. Today this land is believed to be owned by the Monmouth County Park System and a portion of it is used for Phillips Park. Taking these pictures was quite eerie as it felt like an abandoned ghost town. Each house, once occupied by servicemen and their families sit motionless and quiet but one can only imagine the energy that they once emitted. At the very top of the hill are several very large satellite dishes. These dishes are owned and operated by Verestar, a global communications company. This being the highest place in the area, was probably a prime site for these dishes. I was one of the children who lived in one of those white homes. My father was a young officer right out of college who had just joined the Army as a life career. He was married with three children. I was one of the twins, and lived there from ages 1 - 3. I still remember living there! Sledding on the hills and roaming the fields and woods. We lived there 1956- 1958 , my mother used to talk about the big Nike accident when we were older. We called it Telegraph Hill and I remember the big radars, but had no idea until recently of their significance.
