I posted earlier regarding any recommendations on oil companies in Union. We recently moved to Plainfield. Our home is outfitted with an oil tank. Since were just moving in were going to wait at least a year to see if we would like to covert over to gas heat. In the meantime we signed-up with PETRO, since the prior owners had an ongoing service with them.
Actually, PETRO can by our home a day after we moved in to sign us. Unfortunately, in the haste of so much going on we signed up. So, my question is has anyone have had good or bad experiences with PETRO? Should we be reconsidering on looking at some other local oil company?
Is it easy to break a contract once you signed up? Looking for some helpful advice as a first time homeowner with an oil tank. Thank-you
We had Petro for the 8 years we were living in NJ, and even used them to replace our boiler. Their prices were very competitive, they always made sure we had plenty of oil, and their service department was top-notch. Before we replaced the boiler, they were out at least once a year to repair something on the old 50-year-old boiler, which we'd covered under a maintenance service plan that paid for itself quite readily.
There are plenty of smaller, local firms, but they're not likely to be able to be as competitive on pricing since they don't buy as much oil. They also may only have one or two service techs, so when you have a problem (which always happens when it's 20 degrees out, and everyone else is also having issues), it may take quite some time for them to get to you.
While Petro service man were pretty good and usually on time, their oil prices were not the cheapest. If you have a newer unit and don't anticipate a lot of maintenance, I would recommend shopping around. And no, it is not easy to break a contract. Read the fine print on the back. There is a always penalty clause included.
I would stay with the larger outfit. Smaller companies will offer you better oil prices, but check to make sure they have 24/7 service. Even new furnaces will require maintenance, and you want to make sure you don't have to wait 2 or 3 days to get service, especially when it gets cold.
