I now wonder whats going to happen to the other projects that were about to start that would feed into this one. Like the Portal Bridge , the New Yard , New Railway Flyovers , MOM network , West Trenton , Philpsburg extension , idk maybe we should pour billions into the South Jersey network. Of course they need a few things down there.... It looks like Amtrak will cut slots into the city , meaning less NJT trains .......The Amtrak plan won't be finished till 2030. They probably could just upgrade the exsisiting Tunnels , but that would cause a bottleneck that would shut down Regional trade.

I really have nothing against the project....

It is simply the fact that we CAN NOT AFFORD IT, AT THIS TIME!!!

Maybe in the future it will be resurrected and done.

But I have to agree that now is not the time.

BRAVO GOVENOR!

Even though i'm against the project in its current state , thats a bad excuse so we shouldn't fix our Bridges either? I guess will just let those collapse killing 1000s..... I guess we shouldn't fix our pipelines , no $$$ for that....thats ok will just let them rust and explode....no one cares....

NC & VA have been funding their own studies etc. for upgrading the DC to Charlotte rail corridor for high speed passenger rail for years. VADOT got money from the feds for the DC to Richmond run & NCDOT got money for the Raleigh to Greensboro to Charlotte run. Both states had money set aside for these projects & the additional federal money lets them start the physical work. A requirement for this particular stimulus money was that it had to be shovel ready & the individual state had to kick in money.

Because of the federal money, NCDOT was able to juggle things & is currently working on some projects that were slated for next year.

If this means that it frees up more money, I hope that VA & NC can get some additional money to fund the Richmond to Petersburg to Raleigh run.[/quote]

Agreed I think they did it right Sounds like they at least saved money because they knew of the importance. And now getting stimulus money is an unforseen bonus for them but their projects could continue with or without the stimulus money.
I can't speak for VA, but NCDOT has things planned & budgeted to 2030. The rail & road budgets are based on the gas tax & an annual property tax paid on motorcycles & cars. Obviously, budgets projected that far out will have adjustments.

Here's an article concerning this particular version of the stimulous money. States Seek Slice of High-Speed Rail Stimulus Funding - WSJ.com

I really don't know. That depends upon whose viewpoint you read, and most of those viewpoints are fed to the press by politicians with their own agendas, so unless I hear something from a reliable, non-political, non-media source, I tend to be suspicious of all claims of future benefits touting projected job numbers and dollars.

Just basic cynicism from a half century of living in NJ.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. One is a safety issue and one isn't.

Yes it is , the Tunnels are crumbling........the Governor should have pushed the Original plan through which was just new tunnels. Christie is now playing hard ball for the National press......and i don't think thats right for NJ.

What was in this deal for someone in Burlington County? Nothing.

Eventually things will get to a point financially where the residents of Northern NJ who commute to NYC will be forced to realize that they aren't the only damn people in this state.
All that money that's brought back every year from New York City and spent in New Jersey adds up to quite a bit. If you figure 200,000 commuters making $50K a year each--and both of those figures are low--that equals $10 billion per year brought back across the creek from their state to ours. No, Burlington County isn't going to be as directly affected as commuter-feeder counties, but they do benefit.

And hasn't lands been already bought up for it already or is that still going on? I guess I thought the ARC tunnel was already done with research mode and they were beginning to build it.
Yes, you are correct. Construction started last year already, and there's a hole in the ground that is going to have to be closed up now. They will finish up on the contracts that are necessary to finish up for safety, etc., and NJ has to pay back the $200 million (I've also seen $600 million, not sure which is the correct number) of the federal money they already spent.

And then unemployment benefits for the people who are currently working on the project and will be laid off, but I don't know what that will come to. Still cheaper than the overruns, of course.
