I've heard that S. Jersey is worse than N. Jersey for various reasons (not as close to NYC, etc.), but more often the opposite - that N. Jersey is too crowded, ugly, etc. Is S. Jersey *generally* considered superior, or have I just not heard from enough N. Jersey people?
It's not a matter of better or worse. They're simply different. Asking which is better is kind of like asking, "Which is better... mass transit or lunch from a shoe box?" It all depends on what someone wants and needs.

More people on here live in North Jersey, so without a poll you have a result for your poll. The poll is counter productive.
If you really wanted to know, there are already threads that you could read on here and on the subforum (which includes Burlington County, which has a large portion of the Pine Barrens).
As was already said, the areas are different. People in South Jersey are close to Philadelphia & like it that way.
A "which is better" thread seems to be baiting for arguements. It's not like you are saying that you are looking to move to the state, so why bait for arguements? More people here live in North Jersey, so that will win your poll. In my opinion, if you really wanted to know, you would not run a poll & instead ask a leading question like How are the areas different?
Both are great areas and offer a variety of different housing types and access to major urban centers and beaches. Either way you can not go wrong with either.
North Jersey is a cold isolated society closed off from the rest of the US. We operate on the feudal system of government. We have several billionaire kings, thousands of Millionaire lords and ladies, but the masses are impoverished. The over-developed nature of the area gives off a very industrial, Orwellian 1984 vibe, however we have a massive stockpile of nuclear weapons which we use to control the fates of surrounding areas. South Jersey is a more liberal society set in lush fields with honey waterfalls and gumdrop rainbows. It trades freely with the rest of the US but needs the support of surrounding states and municipalities to avoid total annihilation from the North. Basically South Jersey exists because we let it exist...

Central Jersey is the best of both worlds. Somerset County (where I live) is on the border of Middlesex & Mercer County and an hour from both NYC and Philadelphia.
