Dear City-Data Members,

I am a student from Arizona moving to Central Jersey in January 2011 for a 6 month internship. Employer has asked me to stay in Plainsboro and Lawrenceville. I need all the help I could get from Jersey residence. I have few questions I would really appreciate if someone could kindly address them.

1) I will not be able to bring my car, I am thinking to buy a car, I have an option to buy a used car either in NJ or NY. Which state would be better for used by owner price wise.

2) What is the procedure of buying a used car in NJ and registrations. What documentations and paper work would I need?

3) Do I need snow tires to driving in NJ

I am also looking for a room around 450.

Thank you,
Sal Yusoof

1. NY is usually more expensive than NJ so I would assume buying the car in NJ would be best. Plus you then don't have to worry about having to get the car registration transferred from NY to NJ.
2. If you are buying from a used car business they should be able to walk you through everything you need to do.
3. You don't need them, but of course they would help. I have always had all weather tires and never specifically changed to snow tires in the winter.

NY car prices around the city at least are usually more expensive, just because. A friend of mine from Queens NY just bought a new SUV and wound up buying it down in Southern NJ for the best deal. Either way you can shop around online for comparisons. Many times you might be able to find a decent vehicle for +- $1500, still you might need some extra funds if down the road something expensive goes on it.

I think you might need a NJ drivers license to register the car in NJ.
You will need insurance to register it also. Price depends on driving record, age, etc.

Snow tires all depends on how much snow NJ gets in the winter. Some years its not very much, other years its a bit. Depends on whether you want to stay off the roads when its snowing out, etc.
