What streets in north Newark would you recomend I look into. On googlemaps streetview I really like what I see in Forest Hill. As far as ironbound I like it's location to the path. I'm also considering Harrison because there's a path there too. But as far as north Newark what parts of it should I look into? Thanks for all the great comments by the way. You all have been of tremendous help.

It isn't the safest place around but pretty safe by Newark standards.
Right, but I was working on the assumption that the OP is going to need to walk to the PATH and the highest rents in JC tend to be the stuff closest to the PATH. So it's kind of hit and miss. Most of the exchange place area is pretty comparable with Hoboken - I know some places around the Journal Square can be really pricey too.

For North Newark, you'd want to to stay near the Bloomfield border...I'd say the areas near First Avenue. You may want to look into the area of Belleville that borders Bloomfield and North Newark. That area, Silver Lake, has a NJ Transit light rail station and is a little safer than North Newark. You can rent a pretty decent 3BR apartment there for 1400-1600.

You can argue that Silver Lake has almost the same crime rate as Forest Hill or Upper Roseville(First Ave.). North Newark isn't confined to those 2 areas and is much larger than Silver Lake.
