You may be a lil hard pressed to find something in Hoboken for that price range but its certainly not impossible. Just gotta do a little looking on Craigslist. Also Weehawken would be easily in your budget and you could take a bus down to the PATH station.
People always say this, and they are wrong. There are tons of places in hoboken for that range. They will not be new, or have a doorman, but they are livable.
The tax savings are pretty good. If you make $70K, you will save $200/month
I work in midtown east and take the 126 bus. $98/month and not need for a subway pass (I walk across town, it is faster than the bus or subway)
The weekhawken bus to the path station is ridiculous. It would take you 30 mnutes around 8am.
No... I definitely don't make nearly $500K (or I would be the buying market!). Based on my work situation however, I do have the option of switching my office to NJ (since I travel for work and don't actually go to the office much). This would mean I could save the difference of NY/NYC tax vs. NJ tax. (Maybe $1K state Difference + $3K NYC)
Brokenaperture: Also, point noted about the extra PATH+MTA cost per month - it does add up. How did you find your Astoria apartment? I've having a hell of a time on Craigslist trying to figure out which lists are less than legit, and which are actually good deals.
And consensus is Hoboken/Jersey City/Hamilton are likely candidates if I want to stay close to the Path?
You can absolutely get a fairly nice 1 bedroom apartment in Downtown JC or Hoboken for $1,600 per month.
Hoboken: look uptown (north of 6th Street) if you're over 26 or so ... downtown (below 6th) if you're under 26 (it's very loud, crazy, party time Thursday-Saturday.
JC: Grove Street area has best access to PATH while also being near restaurants and bars.

We had a miserable time dealing with Craigslist apartments. Tons of liars, agents saying they had tons of stuff in our price range and suiting our need for pet friendly only to drop the ball as we're on our way to meet him that he has one pet friendly place over our budget.
We ended up just walking into a realtor's office on 30th Ave, told em what we needed and our budget, 15 minutes they took us to a place, we loved it, 10 mins after that we were filling out the application and leaving a cash deposit. It sucked having to pay the realtor's fee but it sure beat dealing with shiesters and dumpy apartments.
Of all the apartments I've lived in from Philly, Brooklyn, Queens and now Jersey, I've tried my searches with Craigslist every single time, and not once have I actually gotten one from a listing I found there. Best bet I've found is going to the neighborhoods and seeing what's available first hand.

Craiglist is like internet. There's ton of postings but you gotta dig through the crap, fakes, bs to find the deal you want. If you don't have time to deal with that then skip that and find a broker to work with. There's also multilisting site you can use MLSLI.com and others for Astoria.
If you want stay close to Path those would be your preferable town. For price of 1500-1600, best is roommate. If you absolutely need studio or 1bed, then lower the expectations a little bit. Not going to get a luxury building or places with amentities. It'll be more of pre-war building with walkups in town like Hoboken.
In my opinion, best transportation and best being most reliable, cheap, and fast is Path so do try to stick near path stations. Also don't forget to count in cost of light rail should you need to use light rail to get to Path.
