Hello,
For my new job, I will have to commute from Woodbridge NJ to Woodcliff Lake NJ. I looked up google maps and it suggest GSP North, travel time of 50 mins and distance of 40 miles.

Can someone answer the following (I would be leaving around 6:45 -7Am) -
1.What is the traffic like in GSP north on the mornings and GSP south on the evenings ?
2. How much is the toll each way ?

Appreciate your help.

Best Regards,
Kumar

The toll is easy to figure out, the mainline tolls on the GSP are all $1.50 each now since they went up this past January 1, 2012.

I believe you have 2 each way, Union and Bergen going North, then Bloomfield, well maybe only 3 round trip, which would be $4.50 a day.

You can verify or check this on the GSP official website.

Traffic is a bit sticky, I don't usually do the run that way in rush hours.

captne76 - Thanks so much for your insight into the tolls.

I hope someone from the forum can comment on the traffic.

All I can say is that in both directions, you are almost always guaranteed to get snarled up around the Oranges. They seem to use it as a local road there, and there is ALWAYS backed up traffic in both directions.

Very bad commute during both rush hours, with traffic jams possible at any time from Route 78 north to Route 3. And yes through Irvington, Newark, and the Oranges it is horrendous.

I might, have to research it, but I might take 78 W to 24 W to 287 N to 208 East to local roads and attempt it that way. You'll be going against the grain for a lot of the trip in the mornings.

A daily commute on the GSP will render you soulless, a veritable automaton devoid of conscience or purpose. You don't want to turn into that.

Thanks Mightyqueen and Marc.
How about if I start around 6:00 AM in the morning ?
I know I will get caught in the return traffic, but would I be able to beat the morning traffic.

I think you'd probably be OK at that time.

Kumar..I travel the GSP exit 140 to 172 every day. I leave between 6:45 and 7am and rarely hit traffic. Ocassionally if there is an accident you might hit some but usually its pretty good. I leave work around 4 and its not bad either..Not so sure what its like between 5 and 6 pm.. Fridays suck coming home memorial day weekend from the shore traffic.

Mightyqueen and Griffith, thanks so much for the insight.
So looks like, I will be doing ok on the morning commute, whereas the evening commute is where I will get stuck.

Thanks for all your help.

6AM and you will have no problem at all. You can average 75, but keep an eye out for smoky. The GSP is heavily patrolled with radar and lidar everywhere.
