Thank you all for the information.

Talking about crime, I have to say no place is 100% crime free. But RW is still a pretty safe and family-friendly place.

Youth Assaulted on Monte Vista and Heights - Ridgewood, NJ Patch
That was an unfortunate incident. That being said, middle schoolers out past 11pm on a Saturday night is not the wisest. Parents need to teach their kids a bit of reality regardless of the neighborhood.

Interesting how so many people want to live in Ridgewood. Good for housing values there. Guess everyone picks what is perceived as the "best" town in NJ and then goes from there.

For our family, having grown up outside of NJ, we just knew very little of the neighborhoods. Many young families, especially NYC transplants, usually want to keep some of their urban conveniences. Walking to shops, transportation is a huge plus. There is an inherent beauty with the town that you usually don't get with a 30k + population. I would say, that's why Westfield is also so popular. Many folks don't want to just move into a small town or a small environment having lived in urban dwellings most of their 20s. Then you throw in preforming public schools, strong real estate values that hold on and a good community feel and voila.
Of course, the sticker shock, including taxes, is usually what finally makes folks consider other options.

Interesting. So would you saw Ridgewood has more transplants than other towns, then?

I think Montclair usually takes the prize on that one. But within Bergen, yes.

Well, it's got the superior school system that has been highly-ranked for decades, which is a big plus. It also has the train station with more trains than most of the other towns, since the Bergen Line/Main Line split occurs after Ridgewood. It has Valley Hospital. The quaint old-fashioned "Village" look of its downtown has been maintained over the years.

Ridgewood has one of those history books that have been made up for most towns, but Ridgewood's history is different from the surrounding towns. Most of Bergen County was settled as farmland and was still semi-rural up to the middle of the last century. Ridgewood has been an established town with banking and commerce since the 1800's and has had train service to NYC since the late 19th century, too.

It's always been a town somewhat set apart. Even when I was a kid in the 1960's, we knew "the rich people" lived in Ridgewood. I was in Midland Park, a blue-collar town at the time. And on the other side of us was Wyckoff, where we bought food for our chickens at the feed-and-grain that was the biggest business on Wyckoff's Main Street at the time!

So, how is there enough turnover in Ridgewood if people are happy raising their families there?

kids grow up and many people leave mostly due to very high property taxes.

also, people buy bigger houses, people downsize, job transfers divorce etc, just like any other town.

Really. The population is about 25,000. Not everyone is at the same point in their lives.
