My husband and i were looking to buy a home in PA but has shifted our search to NJ because its closer to new york where we would be working. my husband works in queens, I in the Bronx and my son works in Brooklyn. commuting is an option for now so anything close to Ny at lease 30 minuntes commuting is not bad. Currently it takes me 1 hour and 45 minutes from bklyn to the bronx. Our budget is $200,000 we would love to stay under that amount, single family with basement and yard for our dog. schools not important we do not have babies.
$200k for a single family home in NJ within a fast commute to NYC is going to be very tough. You will have to sacrifice location (in terms of going to a lesser rated neighborhood) and even then its tough.
You may want to look into Bayonne, Elizabeth (the Elmora section only), Garwood (2-family with rent of the 2nd apartment helping to get you where you need to be), Roselle Park (although slim pickings due to budget).
would it make more sense to live in queens or brooklyn?
i think they live in brooklyn? i'm finding this a very odd post because they were going to move to PA but then all of a sudden they want to go to NJ and have no more than a 30 min commute to all 3 of those locales? For under $200K. Strange.

True. I suggest reading Popular Science and building a Jetpack for an under 30 minute commute.
I think someone is pulling our leg--probably as a result of that post from someone saying people in New York think New Jersey is a cheap place to live!
No way can that be real. House with basement and yard for $200K with a 30-minute commute? Somebody's having fun with us!
I don't get the mention of Pennsylvania either. You were looking at a TWO-HOUR commute and now want 30 minutes...hmm, yeah.
I appreciate your comments really. This is the reason that we have not purchase anything yet because we are trying to settle on location. Yes we live in Brooklyn and we all are ready for a change. Yes we were considering PA because when we drive its hour and a half. For me my work hours the time does not affect me or my son but my husband it will be longer for him because of rush hour. So we are now looking other places other than NJ and yes we dont think NJ is cheap ok. We are just trying to do all the research possible because once you sign on that dotted line you cant change your location, we dont want to jump into it without any knowledge at all. We do appreciate your harsh honesty and welcome any more you have to give really.
The only place within 30 minutes of Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx is Manhattan. You can buy a refrigerator box on the bad side of town for $200k there.......
