Hi, we are in the process of buying/fixing up a home that we cannot live in while being working on. We need a short term lease in the Scotch Plains area. Looking at 3-6 months at the most. Needs to be 3 bedrooms and in this surrounding area. Any suggestions from anyone who has been in this position?
What type of work are you having done? A lot of projects end up taking longer than expected. There are a few options in the Scotch Plains area. However, without knowing the specifics, There is little anyone can recommend.
You need to be prepared to accept what is available for short term, and possibly pay a premium. Most landlords want to rent year to year. Also, be prepared to have your credit run, and sign an agreement.
we tried that a while back and lucky for us, we found a place and closed fast before we had to do the short term thing (old place sold faster than we expected). It is hard. The best advice we were given was try and offer the landlord.
6-month lease, then month to month with a 2-3 month notice.
year lease with 3 early month cancellation fee
Being these types of jobs can take longer than expected, you might just want to get a year lease and eat the rest. Then there is no rushing, and if there are other jobs you want to tackle, you can just them out of the way now
