I'm very conflicted on using the money they have for this particular use. While upgrading lines from 135 to 160mph is nice, it really should not be the priority. The 30-50mph zones throughout CT and around Providence RI, are FAR bigger issues that need to be resolved, and increasing their speed would make much more of a difference to overall travel times than this will.

I believe the estimated time improvement for the $500 million upgrade of what is already some of the best line in the Amtrak system in NJ, is something like 5 minutes for the PHL-NYP leg. A good/necessary improvement (for technical reasons about improved catenary systems and such), yes. What should have been top on the spending list? No.

The Wires need to be replaced along with Substations and a New SEPTA Yard and a few flyovers....to allow for trains to cross over without conflict which allows for more trains to be added. So its not about the time savings at the moment , but the general improvements which are badly needed. The whole New Jersey Upgrade would cost 20 Billion , the New Tunnels into New York , the New Bridges over the Hackensack , the New Kearny Interchange , the Newark Upgrades , the Elizabeth Viaduct shift , the Rahway Interchange upgrade and the wires replaced... As for Rhode Island it will be upgrade later this decade to support thier Regional Rail network and New High Speed line. CT is a mess , so a New Route will go inland bypassing all the coastal slowness while still hitting all services and other cities.

Just some station upgrades and track replacements , along with possible expansions to Cape May and Mount Holly.
