Hi, all

I am staying with friends in Maplewood for the foreseeable future and have managed to rack up my right knee (for the umpteenth time) enough that I really need to see an orthopaedic surgeon who knows knees well. It's also now crippled up enough to keep me from traveling too far from Maplewood to see such a doctor. (I literally can't drive because it's my right knee; but my hosts would be willing to cart me somewhere within, oh, 20-25 minutes.) I can also gimp into the city; I am just a little worried about the expensiveness of good specialists there, as I have to pay OOP; hence my asking for any local-ish recommendations.

Specifically, what I need is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in or at least deals with a lot of knee injuries*; and also one who ideally performs -- or at least is not strongly opposed to, as some are -- knee replacement surgery. Which seems to me my only option at this point; and the real purpose of my doctor's visit is to determine if that is true or not.

Any recommendations would be most welcome.

(Oh, and I would especially value any responses from anyone who is happy with their knee doctor who is not necessarily one of those fabulously expensive super-star specialists who charge $400/visit; as I have to pay out of pocket. I can if it seems crucial, and if you think someone is outstanding enough to warrant the extra money please do respond; but of course I would ideally like a few options whom someone thinks is very good and also in the semi-normal fee range, if there are any such.)

Thank you most sincerely in advance.

* All orthopods have a basic knowledge of knees, but I really need someone very familiar with knee problems and how to tell if someone is a good candidate for knee replacement. A shoulder/ankle/back/etc. specialist is unlikely to have the necessary real knee expertise.

The guy I have always used and my mom recently used for her knee surgery is Seth Kane in Oradell. He works out of Hackensack hosp and is fantastic. I am having ankle surgery in Nov. and he referred me to another orthopedic surgeon for that because he readily admitted he has not kept up on the latest techniques with ankles. He does knees and shoulders mostly (may do hips too - not sure). He did my shoulder surgery back in 2003 when I ruptured my joint capsule and I haven't had any problems since - good as new. My mom is doing great as well.

His number is: (201) 261-7980

Good luck

Orthopedic Surgery New Jersey I work in the field and they are excellent. Of course, many are very good, so check with your insurance carrier first. Orthopaedics is on the high end of services (financially), so your health is vital but you must be a smart consumer, too. Feel better!

So that's where Hartzband went! I used to be in the field as well many years ago (was a certified medical assistant) and I'm currently seeing Kovatis for my ankle at Ortho. spine and sports med in Paramus (where Hartzband used to be) and I was wondering what happened to him. Kovatis is great so far but I can't comment on his surgical skills yet. Why did Hartzband leave that group? I thought he was a partner there.

Hi GoYanks34, I don't know any of the specifics, but he and Dr. Levine are doing great work taking good care of their patients. They are top-notch and well-respected, but as most patients do eventually learn, one also needs a great nurse to do well, too! I hope that all goes well for you. Take care, OK?

He always had a great reputation and I know of many satisfied patients. I saw Savatsky and Schmauss a couple of times when I was younger. That entire group was pretty damn good. Glad to hear he'e doing well. I used to be a certified medical assistant and worked for Leibowitz for many years and I'm still good friends with the docs at Forest Healthcare too so I know all those guys from back in the day. I just went to the 4 legged furry (or sometimes 2 legged feathered) patients instead when I went back to school - LOL.

And just like the saying "behind every great man is a remarkable woman" this is also true: "behind every great doctor is a remarkable nurse!"

Keep up the good work!
