I've lived in Ridgewood for the past 15 years, its a great town and planty to do, from sidewalk sales to Graydon pool, not to mention the friendly library. My wife puts it well, "living in Ridgewood is like you're on vacation everyday".
For the past few years I noticed there are home owners walk around the sidewalk with open beer bottle and let their kids play touch football in the mids of the road. Not sure what to do with these people...... For one I know my house value is going down.
Downtown is nice, but its not Hoboken. Its not walkable unless you live in the downtown area. Most people don't live downtown so they drive to the town to walk around. So I wouldn't base your decision on Ridgewood having a walkable downtown. Ridgewood does have the best pancake house downtown, which you should definitely go to.
