They salted our street about an hour ago. They just came through and plowed. Isn't that backwards? Is this my tax dollars at work?

I would think they should come by and salt again. They might have needed to melt a layer of ice on top of the snow first.

By us it was not a soft snow, very icy, so I'm sure they had to salt first to soften it up.

I heard on the radio that in addition to the salt and plow, the state applies some sort of coating onto major roads some 24 hours before a snowstorm hits to prevent freezing. You have to wonder how all this affects the bottom of your car :-(

Look at what it does to the roads !

After in-laws moved to Florida we were driving around during our first visit. I commented to my husband about how nice they keep the roads in Florida. He said, yeah, it's easy when you have no winter !

The salt, plus the wide range of variations in temps throughout the year does lots of damage to the roads. I'm sure the salt is not doing the car any favors. LOL

I took a basic car mechanic class eons ago, just so I'd know what the scary shapes under the hood were. The mechanic said you should take a lawn sprinkler and put it under your car from time to time and turn it on to wash away salt accumulation.

If you are talking about Govt wasting money, that should be the last thing you'd worry about. There are so much waste in medicaid and pensions.

Might have worked back in the day but now I think you would need a legit car wash to get all the s*** off the bottom of your car

They spray a salt brine mixture on the roads before snow/ice storms instead of salting roads afterward.

Here is a link to a 2009 article from the Star-Ledger when road crews were first trying salt brine in NJ. It's become common practice since then.

Road crews in Montgomery Township didn't wait for the snow to fall Wednesday before they started clearing it off the roads; instead, they began on Monday.

The Department of Public Works there is one of a handful in New Jersey that spray roads with a mixture of salt and water "brine" before a snowstorm arrives, creating a salt layer that stops snow and ice from sticking.
