25 year old male taking a job in Alpha, NJ - have no clue about this area and am wondering what surrounding town might be best for me to live in. I'm single, enjoy having a social life, and make about 100k/yr. Would prefer not to commute more than 20 minutes but would if it was from an area I really liked. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Alpha is basically in the middle of nowhere. You might consider Allentown in PA as a possible living option. There isn't much action there either but Alpha and nearby Phillipsburg are very quiet and a bit, shall we say, rural? The good news is your rent should be low, as these areas are of moderate income levels in general. So you will be a mid-sized fish in a small pond. There is really no place in NJ within an hour of Alpha that isn't very quiet and low key. The closest town with any night life would be Morristown, and that is a major hike. You are moving to the country, my boy, and the excitement might be something like darts, bowling, bingo, horseshoes, hunting, fishing, flea markets, tricky trays, or for some real stimulation maybe a trip to one of the casinos in PA. Otherwise you will get plenty of rest and relaxation. And the conversation will be agriculture, not Aristotle.

Marc left out Tractor Pulls and Monster Truck competitions, but he is right on target regarding the cultural ambiance that you are likely to find in that area.

This might be a clue: I've lived in NJ all my life--54 years--and until this thread, I never heard of a town in my state called Alpha.

Bethlehem PA (Center City area) is probably the closest area with a decent downtown with a chunk of younger people and a concentration of restaurants/bars. That part of the city is quite pretty and has a lot of foot traffic. But you're probably 30 minutes or a little more to Alpha.

Depends on what you're looking for. I live about 18 miles directly east in High Bridge and we love it here. Plenty of state parks/wildlife management areas, my house is less than 10 minutes from the top rated trout stream in NJ, I have a public range a stone's throw away, plenty of opportunity for hunting, fishing, boating, etc... However, in town we have a couple of decent restaurants and bars, one of the top 10 liquor stores in NJ for wine and microbrew selection, and there's a rail line to NYC that hopefully will be expanding service in few years (right now we don't get service on the weekends). Up the road a ways there is a great brew pub in Long Valley, and south on Route 31 most basic shopping needs are fulfilled. Since you'll be closer to PA though, Easton is not a bad little town near Lafayette College-there are some nice bars and restaurants there as well if you're looking for a small city environment.

It is the Pennsyl-tucky side of NJ. I guess Easton isn't that far.

Ha - I grew up 10 minutes from there - in Harmony Township (right by Phillipsburg) - Great country town to live as a kid but I haven't been back really since I left highschool almost 20 years ago! Allentown is probably his best bet although some parts of the town are shady (my sister lived there for 10 years and I'm not sure how).

Yeah, Easton has come along way from where it was when I lived around there 20 years ago. Bars, restaurants - nothing crazy but at least some activity going on.

OK--the OP said northwestern NJ, so I was thinking Sussex County!

I've been out that way, in Phillipsburg, but not in many years.
