Hello.

I am moving from Maryland to NJ with my wife because of my job change.I am just looking apartments in Somerville. I am looking for an apartment for a year or two. Through online searches I found Lauren Garden in my price range.

--This is on South Bridge Street. Does anyone know about the area? Is it relatively safe? Can any body give useful intel? Your reply will be helpful to me and appreciated.

Thank you in advance

That apartment complex has the advantage of being within one block of Somerville's NJ Transit RR station, and only a few blocks from the new Shop-Rite supermarket. Unfortunately, it has the disadvantage of being in one of the few undesirable neighborhoods in Somerville.

If you are fluent in Spanish, it may not be much of a problem for you to communicate with your neighbors, but if the Spanish language is not your forte, you may find this complex and this neighborhood to be more than you bargained for.

Others may differ, but I would not be eager to spend any time in that area after dark.
Or, to put it in different words...there is a reason why these apartments are so reasonably-priced.

Here is an example of just how exciting life can be when you live in that apartment complex.
The street that is mentioned (Holly Glen Road) is the southern boundary of Lauren Gardens:

If you are looking for a reasonably-priced rental in or near Somerville, I suggest that you take a look at Grandview Gardens, which is located in the Finderne section of Bridgewater. While not located in Somerville, this complex is--literally--only about 1/4 mile from the Somerville border.

Additionally, it is decently-maintained, and is in a very safe area. The rent ($1,000 for a 1 bedroom apt) may seem high to someone coming from another state, but this is actually a reasonable rental cost in NJ.

Take a look at:

Thank you very much for the useful apartment information. It works for me, because I am prepared to travel 16 -20 miles one way to my work. Thank you very much for your time and support.

As I said, some will differ.

However, I can add that my first awareness of this apartment complex was during the period that I worked for NJ's child protection agency, DYFS.
This complex was the scene of a large percentage of our Somerville child abuse/neglect cases, and that is never a good thing.
Whenever a particular location has more than one case of this type, that is a probable clue regarding the types of persons who reside there.

I actually live in the south bridge garden apts and have never had a problem with it being unsafe. All of the neighbors are friendly and do not only speak spanish. I have lived in the apts for over 3 years. Now I will say during Hurricane Floyd and Irene some of the apartments flooded.
