I attended Memorial Day services to 'honor' those who gave their all.
What did you do on Memorial Day?
I think some do not understand Memorial Day..Memorial Day is to remember the service people who made the ultimate sacrifice...their life. that is why I always thought the term "Happy Memorial Day" was idiotic, there is nothing "happy" about it.

We have Veterans Day to honor all who served
is that really why holidays exist? its because we need our government to set aside a day to tell us "this is that day where you are supposed to remember or celebrate xxxxxx"?
if you get the chance to explain it to kids why we have this holiday, its a great way for all of us to remember ,without the sacrifices of men and women ,we would not enjoy the freedoms we have today
I wish to thank all who have served and will serve in the future
thankyou
It's also a good day to explain to kids the politics of war, and the fact that America is not always correct in being involved in a war. Sometimes, the troops are not fighting and dying to protect our freedom. Sometimes they are sent to sewers of the world to fight for the wrong reason or no rational reason at all.
It's important not to get too jingoistic during the war holidays. "Because it's us, we must be right and just" doesn't fly. This year, for example, we should reflect on why American troops are dying in a godforsaken horrific country like Afghanistan. We need to get them out of there now so we don't have to honor them during some future Memorial Day.
We really should be exporting ideas like Freedom and Capitalism, and leading by example. Not sending our troops to die for miserable irrational neanderthal savageocracies like an Afghanistan.
Memorial Day needs to become a day to stop feeling, and start thinking.

maybe a great way to celebrate memorial day would be with rallies demonstrarting the desire of Americans to get out of afghanistan so (like you said) we would have less people to remember on memorial day.
ill be honest, i probably wouldnt attend. the tea party that im a member of's most active members are retired people, empty nesters and house wives of older children. when i get a day off, im going to enjoy it with my family no matter what the government and self righteous folk tell me i should be doing.
Several times when creating this post I hit the reply button, but we all know the insatiable need for certain people to be 'the most perceptive guy in the room' so I won't bother pointing out insensitivities.
Foremost, to all who have served; thank you for giving so much for what you believe in. Thank you for your courage and your sacrifice. Our world and the world that our children will inherit is a better place because of your service.

Memorial Day was created after the Civil War to remember all the war dead both Union and Rebels. Up until WWI it was soley for Civil War service killed in line of duty...originally it was called Decoration Day as the proclamation by General Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic called for the graves of the deceased to be decorated with flowers...
We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
if they dont want people to celebrate it, they shouldnt give people the day off.
im not making the suggestion that people should be celebrating, im making the suggestion it shouldnt be a day off.
Oh, please, do tell... what days SHOULD we have off?
I would argue that if we have but a single holiday each year in this country, it should be to honor those that fought and died to give us our greatest gift and privelege - freedom.

we shouldnt have any government holidays. the days we should have off would be personal/vacation days (not mandated by government). if i could think off the top of my head of a mandated government holiday, id say election day so that as many people have the opportunity to vote as possible.
i think everyone should appreciate the sacrifices made by our soldiers. i dont really see the connection between that appreciation and a day off of work.

I didn't really expect you to. But we can just file your "inability to see" as one of those freedoms that we celebrate.
good post marc ,I agree with you not only explaining to kids or people who don't know the real meaning behind memorial day ,but also the politics behind war which inevitably consists of making money
