Hi all - I will be starting a project this week in LI. I live in Cranford, NJ and will be commuting to Melville, LI. I can stay in Melville during the week if I don't want to commute and I work from home on Fridays. Also, I don't have to be in until 9:30-10 on Mondays and I can leave by 2-3 on Thursdays...so I have flexibility.

What is the route and time I should take/leave to get to Melville by 10AM on Monday? SI route says 1:15 on google without traffic while GWB route is a a few minutes less. Also, is it reasonable to try to get home to Cranford once in a while during the week? If so, what time does rush hour calm down going west on LI?

Thanks in advance!

Bing shows 1:10 by GWB and no traffic.

Guess that must be between 2:30 and 3:00am. Can't imagine not having any traffic, plus if there isn't traffic, then there's construction causing backups.

My guess would be to stay in Melville during the week and come home on Thursday afternoon, where you're still going to hit traffic.

Is GWB the way to go? What about Goethals to VZ?

I wouldn't go GWB except as last choice. Furthest distance, most tolls, traffic, Cross Bronx, etc. From Cranford just go through Linden, come out on US1&9 North to I-278 near Elizabeth, that goes straight into the Goethals Br, then going East there's no toll on the Verazzano, but a big toll coming back so I would often go the other way. Anyway going east usually take the Belt Pkwy.

Coming back most often go LIE (I-495) to the BQE (I-278) second or so exit on the left is the Willy (Williamsburg Bridge) straight across Delancey St in Manhattan then one block left and right again, Broome St to Holland Tunnel to Skyway, I-78 to GSP to Cranford.

Traffic in LI is usually a lot worse than NJ but often later on after rush its less miserable. I have driven there back and forth maybe thousands of times. Oh BTW going back there is no tolls at all going the way I described so you only have the one Port Auth toll on the Goethals going in.

i did that for 4 months, you will always hit traffic from that route, i think it will take 1.5-2 hours daily each way with traffic.

@BB, by "that route" do you mean the GWB route, the SI route, or the NJ to LI commute in general?

Thankfully, I'm not planning on doing the commute daily.

Cranford to Melville is not possible on a daily basis. I don't care what anything says on the mapping sites. This is typically going to be a hellacious and miserable close-to-2-hour ride on a good day. On a bad day? Indescribable.

Take whatever measures are necessary to avoid this drive in terms of telecommuting or staying on the island.

I did a similar commute, even further into NJ numerous times, it gets to be about 2 hours, sometimes 1 1/2 hours each day, each way, so its like 4 hours on the road each day. Not fun but doable for a while. Makes you appreciate getting back to America a lot.

I used to do this once a week, it will be hell. No matter which Route you take, there will ALWAYS be traffic.

It's not that easy at any time. Used to leave at 6:30 AM from Middlesex Co. to Garden City via Goethals, SI Expressway (horrible), Verrazano (sometimes horrible) to Belt Pkway (usually horrible). You get the picture. Most of those roads are the pits and if it rains or snows, you'll curse yourself for even trying. Most times 2 - 2.5 hours each way.
