We want to relocate from NY to NJ. What are affordable towns with easy commute to NYC? We are lookin for 2 bed/2bath under $250k and reasonable maintanece charges. Also we have dog, so we need dog friendly building, hopefully condo hi-rise or mid-rise with terrace and laundry in the unit in the nice walkable green area, a park nearby would be a huge plus but not a must. We lived many years in NY and do not know much about NJ towns and communities. We are middle-age couple(36 and 42) and hope to have kids soon. I would appreciate any advice on which town, community, building to look at and any advice on the process of buying condo(what we shoul pay more attention to)

A lot depends on your definition of "reasonable" for both you commute time as well as condo fees. I'd also suggest since you are contemplating having kids you might want to limit yourself to towns with reasonably good schools, or include private school tuition into your budget. (the top school districts will be out of your price range) You might also want to see this thread, //www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...ew-sticky.html it has lots of useful enlightening info.

Few items to be aware. Most New Yorker, especially if they are from upstate and not NYC assume NJ is cheap. That's simply not true.
- Property tax in NJ is high. 2-2.5% as rule of thumb. i.e. 600k place could have tax of 12k a year.
- Towns with easy access to NYC isn't cheap. Its not quite Manhattan or Brooklyn price but its certainly above 250k for 2 bedroom.
- Not all towns with easy access to NYC has good public school district. i.e. Jersey City
- If you live in NJ but work in NYC, you will not pay NYC income tax. You will pay NY state tax but you get credit and it basically evens out NJ state. So in a sense you save 2-3% on NYC income tax. But if you own, you will pay higher prop tax so it just goes into that.
Now that's been said, please read this sticky and post more info so folks can provide more info for you
I would suggest to look in Cranford. Wonderful school systems, low to no crime, beautiful, train ride to NYC. Westfield will be more expensive. Scotch Plains and Fanwood are great. Roselle Park is not as nice. South Orange and Maplewood are okay. Taxes are going to be high. It's NYC suburbs in NJ.
