Hi everyone, I have been searching all the threads and can't really find anything regarding the commute time into nyc from central NJ. Was hoping someone could help me, looking to move in an upper middle class town with good schools and the new construction colonial homes. Looked at a couple in Somerset by the Jackson Ave. park and ride and saw some in Old Bridge, Spotswood and Monroe, however i'm not too sure on what's the best location and if there are more areas we should be looking at.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as brokers are not to helpful with the commute issue.

Price range is from $450-$575,000.

Thank you!

Your broker isn't helpful with commute issues? Odd. Basic stuff.
I'm in central NJ, but more west than you seem to be looking. Certainly you could look here in the Bridgewater area at that price range.
In any case, a good place to start looking for commuter info is New Jersey Transit. On the left side of that page are links for station info, bus schedules, and train schedules.
Good luck. And if I can help with something here in Somerset county.....

If your broker doesn't know about commuting into the city, you need a better broker.

In your price range, I wouldn't bother with Somerset, Spotswood or Old Bridge. They're not upper middle class towns with good schools.

Monroe, OTOH, is. Princeton, too. Also East Brunswick, Cranbury. If you're willing to look elsewhere in Somerset county, I'd suggest checking out Basking Ridge and Bernards.

Good luck.

I love Princeton and lived there very happily before I moved back to NYC, however, the Princeton Junction train station has a waiting list that's 5200 people long - all waiting for parking permits. There's a park-and-ride at Exit 8A
from the NJ Turnpike, where you can take the bus, however.

Edison, North for the upper end houses (some McMansions), South for your average suburban home. Commute from Metropark train station is 45-50 min and about $280 monthly train pass and around $125 monthly parking pass.

Thanks, you all have been helpful. Especially, Rob with the commute info.
I will check in North Edison, do you or anymone now how close the train station is in North Edison? Also, any thoughts on Hillsborough or montgomery township? Too far to commute?

Yes, I agree. In fact, there is a recent hearing on this issue there... where 75 people shared their painful experience. Some really unbelievable!

You can also consider Piscataway area that close to Edison Train Station, where $500k can buy you some nice houses. Besides, Edison Township just added 350 more parking spots in the area ...

Hillsboro and Montgomery are nice towns but seem much farther to commute to NYC.

Default Ideas

How about E. Brunswick? I think there is bus service to NYC from there. Nice town, very good schools.

Hillsborough and Montgomery are tougher to commute to NYC.

Another idea is South Brunswick. Nice town, good schools, in your price range, could take the train from Jersey Avenue New Brunswick, which I believe has a better parking situation than Princeton too.

they are considering putting a line near hillsborough, but its a rougher commute a agree at the moment. Try Bridgewater, Edison, Bernardsville- Old Bridge and Matawan areas you can get the trains, bus or ferry to NYC. Check NJ Transit and check the ferry lines. I am not sure where in NYC you need to be, so you chould check the transportation sites first to see where would be a good place.
