295 totally worth it. It takes about the same time, is a much nicer ride without all the trucks, and it will save you $4+ in tolls. No reason not to. Heading North it also saves you the hassle of the traffic from the PA Turnpike merging in. It can back you up a bunch
There is no such thing as avoiding traffic in DC. That area is so clogged up due to lack of public transportation (among other things). There is basically traffic down there 24/7 since at night is when they close lanes to do construction. I worked down there for a while and can't remember a single time where there wasn't some type of traffic jam.
Ended up leaving 7:30am today (Sunday); took NJT - no problems at all there. Only traffic all the way down was near DC (of course). Just a minor, few minute slowdown on 295 just north of the DC beltway and another on 95 just south of the DC beltway.
