We want to have work done (remodel kitchen, paint, closets, etc) on our house in Bergen County. Does the contractor need to be licensed in NJ, or is a NY License OK? Does this affect what is covered under his insurance and how we as homeowner's are protected? Thanks in advance!

Contractors working in NJ need a NJ license.
They can't file for permits without t NJ license.
If the job does not require inspections (NJ likes to inspect everything) you should be good to go. Just ask for an insurance certificate.

Thanks for the info. If my job doesn't require permits, I work w/ a NY contractor, and then mid- or post-work the town decides I do need permits, what are the ramifications? Do I need to bring on a NJ contractor just to pull the permits?

Electrical, Plumbing, structural carpentry require permits but many of these towns want permits to change anything.
Check with the town before you proceed.
Sometimes contractors have friends in the other states who can help them out with permits.

I rebuilt an entire house because an architect friend helped me with the General Contractor permit.

General contractors in NJ are REGISTERED with the state. Electrician, plumber, etc. require a LICENSE.

My work required the services of an architect for structural purposes and he also had to sign the permit.
I was the license holder for one of the required trades.
