Planning on being in a city/s when truly old as I don't want to be stuck in a suburban house needing to drive everywhere.
Used to see a group of old men at an Irish pub on 3rd Ave in NYC get together every Friday afternoon to have a few drinks and play cards. As my coworkers and I would roll in for happy hour they would be packing it in, heading home, or out to dinner with their wives for dinner...seemed like they had it all figured out.
this would be my dream. as long as there is an urban-like area where i can do this in an affordable way, i'd love to.
Were do you live? The artic. winter in NJ runs maybe from mid Nov. to mid March. During those times you can get some warming trends.
As far as I'm concerned, if I have to turn my heat on, it's winter. The heat is usually on by mid-October and usually stays on until at least late April. In fact this past year, I remember having the heat on a couple days in mid-May. Now that's completely ridiculous.

Delray Beach, FL. Has a great night life on Atlantic Ave., the beach, easy access to West Palm airport. I don't see how anyone retired could continue to pay the property taxes we pay in the NJ area.
You may be trading high property taxes for high homeowner's insurance. I know ppl in Boynton Beach who pay about $8k a year in HI. Ancedotal I know but I don't think off the mark too much.
I am planning for the snowbird lifestyle! Jersey Shore in the spring/summer and Lower Florida Keys all winter/fall
