I'm looking at a new job in Jersey City. I know NJ and now live in Morris County. I'm not looking for town advice, but commuting knowledge on the Interstate 78 corridor. My question boils down to this: How far west on the 78 corridor can I live and still be able to commute to Jersey City in 1 hour, 1:15 hours max? I'd be leaving the house around 7:00 am.

Thanks

Not sure, since I'm not familiar with 78 west of the Turnpike, but leaving that late in the morning, you will hit heavy traffic on the 78 extension with the "14" exits. It's bumper to bumper on a normal morning, but not this week! You have to allow time for sitting in that traffic.

Where in Jersey City are you trying to get to? The waterfront? Journal Square?

Most people take the Pulaski Skyway to get to Journal Square. The 78 extension is normally locked tight with traffic from before 14B in the morning.

Compounding this issue, the Skyway is going to be closing for 2 years starting after the Super Bowl, and the limited "remedies" (shoulder driving on the 78 extension, improving lights on 1&9 Truck/Lincoln Highway) that will be in place are likely to not really come close to compensating. So whatever traffic is now it's likely to get far worse.

You could also consider public transit. Morris&Essex line train to Hoboken and then just take the HBLR to your workplace.

This is kind of a tough question because as someone above mentioned the Skyway is closing for about 2 years in a little over a month from now, February 2014.
I would still go for the job, at least it's on the American side of the Hudson River, lol, meaning you don't have to go through "customs" every day (crossing the river to NYC).

All I can say is with the Skyway being closed that takes out at least 25% of the travel capacity so it is hard to predict travel times. I have never been a big fan of the NJ Pike but they are turning the shoulder into a third lane during the Skyway reconstruction. With the Pike you are quite captive while with other higways and local roads you usually have more alternate outs to get out of jams.

As the other poster mentioned Truck 1&9 the old Lincoln Highway would probably be your next choice.

I used to drive from Bridgewater to Newport, Jersey City and used to take about 1:15 hours. I also used to carpool from South Brunswick to Newport, JC. It would take us 45 minutes for the first 40 miles (from South Brunswick to Pulaski via Turnpike) and then 25-30 minutes for the last 5 miles (Pulaski to Newport).

With Pulaski closing in Feb, it will be a nightmare no matter what alternative arrangements they make.

Thanks everyone. I did not know about the Pulaski closing. Not what I wanted to hear to start 2014, but Happy New Year anyway.

Yeah, when I commuted in Jersey City via the Turnpike extension, I dreaded the toll/bridge area (basically, where hope went to die).

I don't commute that way but I think the Skyway closure is in one direction only? I was also thinking if I had to go that way you could take the Goethals Br the to Bayonne Br and come in that way. It would cost you $5.50 in tollsif you have EZ Pass and sign up for the EZ Pass PASI bridges plan. They knock the big toll $12 or $13 down to $5.50 if you go at least 3 times per month and sign your EZ pass account up for the discount. On the way back I would just mainland it rather than pay another toll.

You could work your way to 508/7 also, but everyone else is going to have the same idea.
