Nobody has to move to the suburbs. I would advise anyone to widen their search beyond a seven block radius though. If you are set on one place find the areas you are most comfortable in though you need some time for that. There are rentals and short-term leases for that purpose. Buy yourself some time if this is serious, right?
I dont live in newark i am a landlord and live in jersey city but all i can tell you just use the general rule of thumb in a city the closer you are to the train and commuter options to NYC and Abroad the higher the rent and generally safer the area due to increased police presence due to public transport hubs also use Your own common sense the reason i say "your own" is while someone might think one area is a bad neighborhood due to crime rate and statistical data, the other may say its a bad area because of its inhabitence of a certain group of people. For example i had a tenant of mine move out of my building in brooklyn because she said "their are to many yuppies and Jews its very dangerous" LOL right me being a jew bit my tongue but its whatever had a similar problem in jersey city certain people just think a certain race,group or orientation of people bring crime.

The area you're talking about isn't too bad. In fact, that whole part of Newark isn't that bad. Just avoid MT Prospect and Highland(close to Barringer High). Also, do you live by yourself? If you have kids I'd highly recommend you don't live in Newark at all.
