Hi- My family and I are thinking of moving to Chatham, NJ in the coming months. My husband will be commuting to the city and I was wondering what the easiest/cheapest/fastest train options will be? I know only Chatham Borough residents are able to get a parking permit so I was wondering what everyone else does? Any info is appreciated thanks!

most people i know in chatham walk to the train. it is easy to walk to from almost every part of the borough.

if you are confused about the train, it is on NJT's morristown line, and there is direct service to NYP. there is a schedule at njtransit.com. you buy a monthly pass, which gets you unlimited trips between chatham and nyp, and free light rail in jersey city, newark and south jersey should you need it.

Thanks so much. A lot of the sections we are looking at are very far from the train. Does anyone drive to another train station and park? Are there parking permits available in other towns?

Yeh, unfortunately the parking is only for the Borough residents only ... If you choose to live in the Twp, Summit is a good option, it's a quick drive, and since the Summit train station is a hub, getting a midtown direct train is easy (express trains). The drive to the Summit station - it all depends on what part of the Twp you live in, but generally less than 15 minutes. The down side of parking at Summit is the cost - $10 a day. Many opt instead to drive to either Millington or Berkeley Heights (parking permits are available Millington is ~$200/yr and BH is ~$220 per quarter for non residents)
Plenty of parking available at the Morristown station, so that is an option as well. (~$85/mo uncovered and ~$100/mo covered for non Morristown residents). Best of luck!
