Anytime you have a stranger in your home, it's a risk. However, I don't think it's a particularly high risk. I've bought and sold countless items on CL (most recently I gave away an "old school" 32" TV that was taking up space in my living room, so the guy did me a favor by taking it away).
If it is small enough that you can fit in your car, I would simply meet the person at a neutral spot (places I've used in the past include Burger King and Dunkin Donuts parking lots).
If it's something big like a TV, you can have them meet you in the evening, just make sure you are not alone when they come over
The biggest problem I've had with CL is people who say they are coming over to purchase the item and then never show up. Whatever you do, don't promise to "hold" the item for anyone. If they want it bad enough they'll come get it. I've been burned by that too many times.
You're more likely to run into scammers if you are attempting to sell electronics, like an old cell phone (that has happened to me). If you're trying to sell something less valuable like an old lawnmower (which I have done), you're less likely to have problems.
I've never sold or bought anything from CL, but a lot of people have told me they answer the CL ad and have gotten free furniture and pets and everything was fine.
CL is mixed lot. Like I've gotten legit jobs from CL. I've also had interviews and taken jobs and quit because something was off. I've also had friends answer CL job ads and are basically propositioned to have sex do some type of pornographic job (that wasn't the job in the ad).
If you see something on CL reply. In your email ask to talk on the phone and I wouldn't go in anyone's house alone.
My last buyer hit me with, "Is the item still for sale?" He'd never dealt with CL and didn't know that he wasn't supposed to say that. Nice guy. I'm female so always make sure that there's someone else here for a pickup. I would still do that if I were a guy.

I dont understand what's so bad about asking if the item is still for sale. They wanna know if its still available. I had people ask me that a few times that were legit buyers.

Usually such inquiry are from bot to mine your email. But CL has got smarter now, your email is never revealed even if you reply to such generic question. I actually get angry when I get such question, why would I keep item active if item is sold?
You might be able to ...but in my opinion, this is the equivalent of selling used underwear (Why would someone in their right mind buy THAT?)
Think of all the stuff you do on your mattress. Now think of sleeping in someone else's stuff. Ugh!!
Unfortunately, you may already be spending the night with other people's mold, mites, bacteria and bodily fluids.

The key word is "item". Real people don't tend to say that - they say what the item is. The bots aren't smart enough to pick out from the ad what the item actually is. I don't think I've ever had a legit buyer ask if the "item" is still available, but I've had many emails from bots asking that.

Because you're lazy like most of the people on CL? Really though, do you rush to your computer and remove the posting as soon as the item leaves your possession? Maybe the person is emailing you in this lag time. I probably would assume the item is still available and not ask that question, but I don't get angry when people do.
