Upper manhattan... like closer to George Washington Bridge? Important since many commuters look for train access which may not be important for you.

If you weren't looking for a 2BR I'd say you'd be best off in Manhattan itself -- safe, young, diverse, urban, short commute.

Take a look at Fort Lee, NJ. Lots of highrises & right by the GWB (George Washington Bridge.)

For train / bus info:

NJ Transit

MTA (NYC subway / bus)
MTA | Subway, Bus, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North

yea, you need a little more info. Young? To me that is 35. Upper Manhattan? To me that is anything above 42nd st. If you are really young (like <30) and you have no real need to live in NJ (you do NOT need OR want a car if you are in NYC), then live in NYC. You will not regret it. Tons of negative points when you look at it on paper, but there has to be a reason 8M+ people live there

What does the "E" mean in your subject? If it means East, as in upper-east side, then you don't want to live in NJ. Live in Manhattan or Queens instead.

thanks folks!
yeah, in the 30s .. and upper East side manhattan is the general work area

we are open to 1-bdr to start with and get a feel for living costs; and ideally like something newer and decently-maintained high-rises for renting; hopefully within $2k

wish to keep commute less than 1hr as well

hope this clarifies and some of you can provide further detail.. thanks again!

If you can push the budget up to about $2500, you could get a nice 1 bedroom in a newer high rise in Jersey City. If you can settle for an older (1970s-80s) highrise or a brownstone, you could find a 1-bedroom below $2000. The commute to the UES wouldn't be terrible (PATH to WTC, walk to Fulton St to catch 4/5 train to UES). You could probably get from door-to-office in about an hour (~40 min transit time), assuming E 79th Street is the UES location. Add time if your work destination is farther north, subtract if farther south.

Fort Lee, as others mentioned, might not be a bad idea either. The commute to the UES will be an hour (transit time alone) using a bus to the GWB bus terminal and another bus down to the UES (less time if your workplace is north of 79th St, more time if it's south). Not sure how much apartments there are renting for, but there are a few highrise buildings there. It's more suburban in feel than Jersey City, though.

Another option is Long Island City in Queens, but I think a highrise would be far beyond your budget, probably in the $3000 range.

why would you say so?

From what I have seen, a large majority of folks prefer NJ so they can have some house for the $$ and perhaps afford a car, etc. .. travel to UES via PATH & MTA which is about $200/month total and about an hour of transit!
