Hi All,

My husband's work place has been moved to WTC, NY. We have to move ASAP to NJ from PA. Have bn in PA all along. Have absolutely no idea about the state. Please let me know of some safer places with reasonable Indian community presence within one hour travel to WTC. Our budget is around $1600 for rent. Kindly help. Please suggest places other than Edison & Princeton. Thanks in advance!!!

Parsippany has a huge Indian community, is about an hour commute, and fairly safe, though some on this board have more negative impressions than me. Parsippany is geographically huge, so how nice your neighborhood is really depends on what section you're in.

First, welcome to the NYC metro area. Please see the sticky thread located at the top of this forum, Questions For Future and Potential Residents And then please provide us with your answers to the questions.

This forum is filled with many knowledgeable, helpful people would are more than happy to share their experience, and expertise with people considering moving to this area. By giving us a little bit more information on your needs/desires and wants we will be happy to give you truly useful recommendations.

It would also be well worth your time to read this thread to familiarize yourself with the realities of commuting from northern NJ to NYC for work, as those from outside the area are typically (blissfully) ignorant of the situation. I think we need a new sticky....

Just wondering - you say you know nothing about NJ & yet don't like Edison or Princeton. Why is that?

Take a look at Plainsboro. You can use the Princeton Junction NJ Transit station (NorthEast Corridor Line), switch at Newark for the PATH to WTC.

www.njtransit for schedules.

West Windsor Plainsboro School District is very good.

Of course, Edison would be a shorter commute (same train line.) (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

What size apt. do you need? How many children?

Doubtful that a landlord will rent a one-bedroom to parents with a child. Look for 2-bedroom apt's.

Since your child isn't school-age yet than you can choose between living somewhere with a short commute (poor schools) & somewhere with a long commute (better schools.)

You'll need to choose between short commute - extremely high rent & long commute - just plain old high rent.

Kindergarten is closer than you think ! The time will sneak up on you.

You could rent in Newport in Jersey City & have a really short commute for awhile & use the next couple of years to find a place to live in a good school district. Newport rent is very high becase people pay to have short commutes.

Lots of toddlers in Newport, but everyone moves away before Kindergarten. There is a large Indian population in Newport, which you requested.

Newport is a quick trip on the PATH to WTC which makes it easy for your husband to get to work & easy for you & your child to take day-trips to the City.

Hi Taddy,

I live in Cambridge Heights in Nutley, NJ and it has a very strong Indian presence and lots of young families. It's a townhouse community and about an hour door to door to WTC. Good luck!

I would look in Jersey City (newport, Journal Square or grove st). Very quick commute and easy access to mass transit. Especially since schools arent a concern.
