Not the biggest Christie fan, but I'm a little hazy on what one's sports team fandom has to do with their job. I mean, I know Giants fans and I know Jets fans but that has little to do with how they do their job.

Does being a Governor require one to support a local sports team? Maybe reporters need to be asking these serious questions before politicians really get going. I mean, never mind the dismantling of teachers unions or the disrespect of the press, does the man like the Devils or the Flyers?

How far down does it go, do mayors need to be lifelong fans of the local team? What if you love the Islanders because you grew up on Long Island but end up moving to Buffalo in high school and end up running for mayor?

'Fat assed ... creep' Chris Christie is target of Philadelphia councilman's Twitter rant for being a Dallas Cowboys fan | NJ.com

In case that link is deleted for its language:

Philadelphia Councilman Standing Firm For Calling Christie A ‘Fat [Expletive]’ On Twitter « CBS Philly
You know, I wasn't going to respond to this thread until I read your links. Like a few others here, I'm not a big Christie fan, but that Philly councilman's attitude is a bit pathetic. I was literally scratching my head because I'm not sure if he's serious.

He calls Christie 'fat ass' (fine, whatever, he's not the first and definitely won't be the last). But then goes on to suggest that since NJ and Philly are neighbors that the NJ gov should show a 'little more respect'. What?! Publicly shouting someone out and you want more respect? I don't even like when Christie does it at town hall meetings, but at least that's actually based on politics and not a football game.

Agree, it's completely pathetic. A commenter on a different news article on the subject said "I didn't know Philadelphia was in New Jersey." Yes, exactly. It's not. And even if it were? So what. He is allowed to like whatever teams he chooses and attend their games. There is no law that says a politician must like the local sports team of his area. It would be a little more insensitive, I think, if he attended a Dallas game at MetLife and rooted for the Cowboys, or even more so if we actually had a NJ football team and he did the same thing, but even in those circumstances it's not the end of the world. I wouldn't make this big a deal out of it even in that instance. This is a non-issue.

A bad move politically? South Jersey is home to many an Eagles fan who likely voted for Christie. And although the Eagles and Giants have a divisional rivalry, neither is as intense as each club's respective rivalry with the geographically misplaced, "Eastern Division" Dallas Cowboys. No true New Jerseyan could root for the Cowboys, could they?

Or a good move politically, forecasting Christie's intended departure from New Jersey in favor of national office? There are certainly more Republican voters in Texas than in New Jersey!

No shock here.

The average mentality today is more concerned about the Kardashians then politics.

Would love to see if this would be an issue if it was Corzine, not Christie, or another Democrat governor in a generally blue state when American media doesn't care to show it's more blue-leaning bias...

I can't speak for anyone else, but IMHO, anyone who considers a sports team affiliation to be significant-- for any person, of any party--needs to reassess his/her priorities. If spectator sports constitute such a significant part of somebody's life, there surely can't be much of real importance going on...

I like NY fans and Dallas fans better than Philly and Pittsburgh, not trying to pick a fight but why are PA people so miserable and angry all the time. NYers are super friendly compared to Philly, Pittsburgh and Baltimore people? I think they have a short man complex or something

Totally agree! That's part of my point - but would it even be an issue if Christie was a Democrat? In this state/with this media? I don't see it being reported, at least.

Not sure about Pittsburgh, but Philly fans are notorious for being total a-holes. I'm not surprised at some of the reactions from Philly people.
