Hello all,

I was just informed by the company that hired me for after graduation that they would like me to work at their facility in Central NJ. As a recent college grad, I'd like to not spend too much (thinking around $1200/mo) for a 1 bdr or studio apartment in either New Brunswick or Princeton. Are there any good neighborhoods or complexes that you would recommend? I'm 21, so I'm looking for a place that has access to some nightlife/restaurants/etc.

Thanks for your help!

JM, welcome to NJ, and congratulations on the new job!

In order to give you truly useful suggestions of communities to look at, we really need more information from you as to what you are looking for in a new community, as well as your expectations of what you want in a new home. Please see the sticky at the top of this forum, Questions For Future and Potential Residents and post your answers to the questions. Please be as detailed as possible when describing what you are looking for in a community, and type of housing. Do you want a walkable downtown area with plenty of shopping and restaurants, or a more suburban environment. Are you needing mass transportation? Are you ok with having to drive to do all of your typical errands (groceries, dry cleaners, dr's offices, etc.) Do you want a single family home or are you ok with a townhouse/condo? Will you be renting or are you looking to purchase? How long of a commute are you comfortable with? (please keep in mind, we here in New Jersey are hard core commuters, an average work commute is about 1 hr to 90 min) Do you want acreage, or city lots? (urban/suburban vs rural suburban) What type of activities are you looking for - do you hike, mt bike, fish, explore the outdoors, or would you rather explore the city with the galleries and museums? NJ is filled with many quite small communities, each with their own school district, and each having their own "personalities," amenities, and atmosphere.

This forum is filled with many knowledgeable, helpful people would are more than happy to share their experience, and expertise with people considering moving to this area. By giving us a little bit more information on your needs/desires and wants we will be happy to give you truly useful recommendations.

In addition... are you open to sharing a place? Your budget would get you you a lot more if you were open to that.

Where are you coming from? Columbia, SC but I am originally from Glassboro, NJ. I'm just not very familiar with North/Central Jersey
Why are you moving? Graduating school and starting a job
Where will you be working ? Jamesburg, NJ

Will you buy or rent? Rent
What is your budget ? ~$1200/mo
What kind of place are you looking for ? Looking for single bedroom/studio apartment. I would maybe consider a 2 bdr, but single would be much more preferable.

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Nope
Do you need/want good public schools? Nope

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in: Definitely looking for a younger, diverse neighborhood. I want something downtown within walking distance of restaurants, bars, etc. New Brunswick is about 30 min from Jamesburg, which is why I'm thinking mostly there (I checked out Princeton prices too, but seems way more expensive there). Being close to NJ transit would be nice, but I'll almost certainly need to drive to work so it's not a complete necessity (but it means I will need parking).

List three things that are important to you in order of importance: downtown, urban, proximity to Jamesburg

Sorry I didn't include earlier, and thanks for any help!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I will most likely only be working in this location for my company for about a year or so, so if you know of any complexes with flexible leasing that would be a plus.

Well, I can help you a lot and I have a lot of knowledge about New Brunswick.

But if you're only gonna be there a year, then I would say just get a room in a share. You are only 21 after all.

There's tons of shares that are put up by grad students. Try and get one on the George Street side. There are more 'adult' bars there, but really at age 21, you could still be hitting up the college scene still. I assume you are aware Rutgers is there.

Yea. No sense in doing the 1 bdrm/studio year lease if you'll be gone very soon and you're young enough to take advantage of the shares. Much, much cheaper option.

If you really want to have your own place, rent from an independent homeowner of a multifamily.

If you want a leased building, I have a bunch of actual buildings to recommend, but I wouldn't advise you do that.
