Haven't done this commute but I believe your best bet is living in Northern NJ somewhere near the Garden State Parkway. This will get you to Rockland and to the Taconic, which connects to Westchester. This way you avoid going thru NYC to get to Westchester.
I don't imagine the commute is that terrible if you are in Northern NJ.
Have two family members that make the commute to New Rochelle. All of the Northern Valley towns and others that border Rockland are probably your best bet. To be honest, it's not a great commute but doable. Depending on where you are in NJ you can take either the GWB or Tappan Zee, and Rt 287 from Rockland goes into Westchester.
Only to make the occasional trip to Stew Leonard's in Yonkers. Boy, they really need to build a store in NJ.
My brother has to occasionally commute from Fair Lawn into Mount Kisco, and previously had to occasionally commute to Scarsdale and Yonkers. While the distance may be longer, unless you're in Way Eastern Bergen County, the Tappan Zee will save you time and sanity. As long as it doesn't crumble into the Hudson before they build the new one.
It's doable, but certainly not a prize-winning commute.
I used to commute from Ridgefield to Purchase NY. I went early in the morning (6:30) so it didn't take too long (35 minutes). The commute home was a different story. It usually took me ~1hour to get home but there seemed to be a lot more traffic in the summer. Summers took on average 1.25-1.5 hours to get home.
It is going to be hell during the rush hour at least with the current incarnation of Tappan Zee bridge. I know a few people who commuted and they said that there is horrible traffic on the bridge and the approaches. Westchester parkways also clog up gong South. But if you need to go North in Westchester you will probably be OK.
since Westchester is north of nyc, id imagine there are better places to live that are north or west of Westchester (or in it) than to live in nj. I was looking for office space in yonkers for a while and it wasn't a nightmare of a trip but why go through nyc or nyc traffic if you don't have to?

All of the Stew Leonard's locations in NJ are wine/liquor stores.
More than likely that person was referring to their supermarkets, which are very good but not located in NJ, and not to their liquor stores. Additionally, those Stew Leonard's liquor stores are not actually affiliated with the food stores, and are operating with a "purchased" name.
