Need to move ASAP because we live in a horrible school district and are paying for an overpriced house and high mortgage. Looking for a town in North Jersey that is safe, affordable, has great schools and is not so rural? any help and ideas are greatly appreciated! ! thanks so much!

What is affordable? I make around $26000 a year so your definition of affordable is likely not mine.

In general terms, when you don't have a lot of money to spend on a home ($500k is where your options start really broadening) you have 3 options.

1. Move to an undesirable area like Elizabeth, Patterson, Edison, Newark where it is cheap.

2. Downsize and move into a nicer area (this means moving into a condo or a duplex, or perhaps a small 2 bedroom home that needs work)

3. Move farther out.

I don't think you want the first option because those places are unsafe and have bad schools and they aren't the places where people with choices move too.

Depending on your situation, i#2 may be doable if you're able to find something. Towns and cities that have a lot of available multi family housing usually aren't as safe as places that don't and their schools usually aren't as good. That's because the people who usually move into apartments are lower income people usually bring crime up and schools down. places create a cost barrier to entry on purpose because they know that their best protection from becoming the next ghetto (Newark was nice too) is keeping people who don't have money out.

What most people do is 3. They move farther out. It's cheaper and you get more for your money. Central jersey is where you will find things especially ocean county however if you work in the city its a shlep.

Do you have to stay in jersey? If you work in New York look north to Rockland County. Same quality of life as NJ, but cheaper, safer, better demographics if you know what I mean and an easy commute 45 mins fo midtown.

Since when is Edison undesirable? I thought their schools were pretty decent.

Edison's schools are very good.
While the traffic congestion and the local corruption are both off-putting to me, Edison is neither cheap nor a place with poor schools.

Thank you guys!
Okay I am a mom and a wife. We have to short sale our home because our mortgage is very high. I have a special needs little boy who needs a great school ; he is getting better with his speech and I know that with a good school he can succeed and overcome this learning difficulties! The local school district has a classroom with kids all ages, aggressive kids, all disabilities in one room, no resources, (my son is not aggressive; he is a late talker and shy). the school is forcing us to place our son in that horrible school. Is a lonely, rural, cl icky town is been a nightmare! we need to leave really is so sad. Looking for a friendly community with great schools. I wish I could tell you how difficult our situations is and on top of that we have our parents living with us and we have to take care of them (both elderly) but we love them and are taken care of them!
