The sloppy joe thing was news to me. But I'm originally from New York.
I did like the comment about taxes...
Yes, I grew up with sloppy joes being the hamburger meat in the sauce, but as an adult I had the other sandwiches called sloppy joes. However, they were two types of cold cuts with the cole slaw and Russian dressing--no cheese, because they came from a kosher Jewish deli.
I've always known sloppy Joe's could be of either the hot and cold variety. Out where I live, near the PA border, people eat some kind of pork based, hot sloppy Joe and call it barbeque.
First it's not "JERSEY!!! Is it York , is it Hampshire ....eff NO it's New York , It's New Hampshire ,it's frecking NEW JERSEY!!!
People don't call it JERSEY out of ignorance, they call it JERSEY out of affection. It's a nickname, that's all.
Maybe New York and New Hampshire aren't regarded as affectionately by its inhabitants.
James Taylor never once refers to it as NORTH CAROLINA in 'Carolina in My Mind', when he sings lovingly and longingly about CAROLINA. Same concept. I'm pretty sure he knows the state's formal name is NORTH CAROLINA.
