Hi All. I recently moved from Illinois back to NJ and lost my car title in the move. It's currently registered in Illinois. I can't seem to find what I need to show the DMV in order to obtain a duplicate title and ultimately get the car registered in NJ. Any help is appreciated!

I think you mean what you need to show Illinois DMV what you need to get a duplicate IL title? I think you would have to get that from IL first. Unless the car is old enough that you could go to some other states like possibly VT without a title then transfer that to NJ.

No, I actually used to live in NJ, bought the car in NJ back in 2010. Then I moved to Illinois, had to get it registered there (which is still active because I just renewed it in 2014). And now I'm back in NJ, needing to get the car registered in NJ. They apparently require the car title to get it registered in NJ, which I no longer have.

Okay so when you moved to Illinois, I suppose they issue titles, you would still have to go to the Illinois process of obtaining a dupl title, from IL as I see it.

They'll give you the NJ title as soon as you present your duplicate IL title. Just request a new one online. ^^^^
