Definitely check credit unions. I have one called Alliant, which is based in Chicago, but works really well for me. I take photos of checks for deposits, free checking, and get money from any CU ATM.
Don't all the big banks have some sort of free checking - Chase, BofA, Citi, etc? I also think the bigger banks spend more on technology so their mobile apps tend to be more polished and secure.
I've always liked my credit union (Affinity). But Santander offers an account that pays you $20/month if you use direct deposit and their online bill-pay

I've been with Affinity for 25 years. They are one of the good guys.
If you are paying $20/month, you are crazy. Do you have direct deposit? If so, then most banks make checking free. Do you have a mortgage with a bank? Then they will throw things like this at you
I use chase. It if fine. I have a mortgage with them, so I have 2 free checking accounts, 3 free savings account, free safe deposit, ...
I work in the city, so I can hit their ATM's at anytime. But there are 3 or 4 branches within a 10 minute drive of my NJ house. The only reason I really ever go there is to get cash, and I just do that when I am at work

Oh and just some info for folks that are concerned about ATM availability with credit unions. With Affinity, I can use any ATM at CVS, Quick-Chek or Target without any fees, so that basically replicates a reasonably wide ATM network that you'd get with a big bank.
i use TD bank premier checking. i have free atm usage (ANY atm), free checks, free checking, etc. i keep a 2500 balance in there at all times to qualify.
i have an account with tdbank. i dont think they charge me any fees unless i let it go under $500. i dont keep much money in the account. i primarily keep it for the benefits of having a physical branch to go to if needed. for everything else, i use fidelity.
