I would expect the numbers are not to accurate. I can't tell you how many times I created an account on a website to look something up, never to log on to it again, I'd say I have around 100 "accounts" on different websites the internet, and I don't use 90% of them. Just because someone creates a "free" account on a website, you can't really count that as an regular user. Only paying users (those that have credit card information on file) can really be considered real users of Ashley Madison. After all a lot of people look at porn on the internet, but you be hard pressed to find someone that actually pays for it.

This is somewhat a shocker. Used to live there. Super tiny town, with a total population of something like 20K. Suppose half of them are male (Ashley Madison's users are overwhelmingly male). Excluding those who are either too young or too old for this sh*t, there are maybe less than 7,000 in the right age.

I don't think it means that. It is just one of many web sites out there that people surf through. I think tech gromit is not alone. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people just logged on just for entertainment value. The people that actually paid for a membership are a different story. They might be guilty of what you are assuming, but with the numbers they are talking about, I think they must have included everybody in the hack. I bet most email addresses on the list are just gawkers.

Yeah. The numbers just don't add up. Noel Biderman's net worth is around $100M. If he really had 36 million subscribers paying like $20 a month, he would be a multi billionaire. Even if he had only 10 million current subscribers at $20 a month, that would mean a gross monthly income of $200M, and a gross yearly income of $2.4 Billion. That doesn't explain a net worth of only $100M. Thats why I am sure the vast majority of email addresses on the list have to be these temporary free accounts.

I'd be more interested in seeing the percentage of population of a given town rather than the raw numbers
They are starting to figure out this was mostly kids and that the numbers aren't panning out .In Maine there was atown with 2800 members but the town only has 1600 residents so I wouldn't get to crazy about this .
