I'm possibly taking a job in Monroe, NJ and my husband works in downtown Manhattan and needs to be at work by 6:30am every day. We're looking for suggestions on what towns to look in thats less than 30 min drive to Monroe but only about an hour commute to WTC. Also, good schools and safe are top priority.

Thoughts?

Try Metuchen or Edison. They both have train stations. Your husband could take the train to Newark Penn and then transfer to the Path train to WTC. From these towns you can get on the Turnpike at exit 10 and make it down to Monroe within 30 minutes. You could also try East Brunswick. From there your husband would have to drive to New Brunswick or one of the other NE Corridor train stations.

around 300,000 and definitely want a 3+ bedroom single family home so no condos or town homes.
Main concern is good public schools and low crime.

That's a very tight budget anywhere in NJ for the criteria you seek. You will probably be looking at a fixer upper in that price range.

Yea, I mean we're not delusional. I just want to be in a decent area and a house that needs work doesn't scare me. My husband is an electrician.

All very good ideas !

I might lean more towards E. Brunswick or S. Brunswick because that would give you something like a 15 minute commute & you can avoid major highways. I assume that you don't want to work far from home if you have children.

Hubby could get NorthEast corridor train at Jersey Ave. station, at New Brunswick, or Princeton Junction. More likely to get a seat at PJ.

Be sure to check into parking availability at train stations !

Coach USA has buses that will take your hubby from E. or S. Brunwick to downtown Manhattan Wall Street.

Check Coach USA for schedules & to see if there's a bus early enough for him.

Bus might be easier for him than switching trains.

Coach USA buses run to/from the City that stop in E. Brunswick, S. Brunswick & Monroe. That might give you another transportation option also.

In our development the townhomes are single family. Although we live in the apartments. <g>

Your budget is very, very tight for central Jersey.

Also, once you decide on a school district be sure that your residence is in your chosen district before signing a lease or buying. The town name in the mailing address of the residence does not always reflect the school district that the address lies within. Best to call the school district before making a final decision on a residence.

OP, you will have to compromise on at least one of the criteria. A 3BR single family house within an hour d2d from NYC and 30 mins of Monroe, and good schools - all within 300k is just not possible.
