Parents purchased homes in better neighborhoods in the city in order for their kids to go to Ann Street, Wilson Avenue schools and are told NO. How is that fair? Many literally live across the street from their neighborhood school. Kids are being given NJ Transit bus passes and are told to get on a city bus to get to school miles away.

Maybe you should see where your money as a taxpayer is truly going to. I can tell you more of your $$$ is going to fund charter schools than public schools. It's a game that is blinding the public.

The Ironbound has schools that are 150 years old and crumbling, yet there are brand new charters popping up.
Where did Face Book Zuckerberg's donation to the tune of $100M go to?

Someone needs to hold Cory Booker's feet to the fire.

We the taxpayers also donate billions with the Abbott district funding. See the great results from pouring money into Newarks schools. Obviously money is not the problem. And I might add I don't blame the teachers, I blame the students and some parents.

The rational for increasing the gas tax is supposed to be to offset an increase in property tax and or corp tax. The gas tax being the second lowest in the nation benefits only drivers who pass though NJ full up and keep going about their business. An increase in gas tax is not meant to also keep increasing property taxes. In a perfect world you'd increase the gas tax and lower property tax to ease the pain of property owners. NJ gas tax is way below the national average and I'm not sure what the benefits of it being so low is.

Jeez, what a bunch of crybabies. This is not your fathers NJ. Not the NJ of 30-50 years ago.
You don't like it move away, not to PA where the commute is as about as tolerable as a sharp stick in the eye.
Move south where the taxes are low and the wages match. The schools are great just ask any southerner, they'll tell ya'll how great dem schools is.

Or

Stay in NJ and put away as many of these $$$$$$ as you can and retire south but don't wait to long as the neighborhoods down here are filling up with the nasty northerners you all dislike so much.

A lot of it went to charter schools. About $30m went to retro pay to teachers who did not have a contract for 3 years. They were owed retro pay once the new contract went into effect. They went back and gave the teachers what they were owed. It was NOT a lot of money per teacher. No more than $1k-$2k per.

A huge portion went to "consultants" that are paid in the hundreds to thousands per hour to do a whole lot of nothing.

And Brendan Byrne instituted the NJ state income tax as a method to relieve the property tax burden. Now we have high property taxes AND and income tax on top of it. Always be suspicious of a politician that tells you that raising one tax will decrease another tax.

It never, ever, ever, ever, never, ever, ever happens that way. You just end up with higher taxes.

How does NJ benefit from lower gas taxes? That seems very obvious to me More money in people's pockets. Yes, people passing through benefit, but NJ residents LIVE here and buy ALL their gas here, so it is logical that they benefit the most.

People complain about a raised gas tax being an insult due to high taxes overall, yet never complain at all about NJTransit fare hikes. Are not both of those user fees? Why should the people who make use of a more sustainable form of transit be punished?

Gas is a commodity/material, public transportation is a service. They are very different.

The benefit is that people are keeping more of the money they earn and own. The gas tax should be reduced, not increased. And the same with property and income taxes. This should be offset by slashing services and eliminating all future pension and health care liabilities.

Raising the gas tax "because it is lower than other states" ignores our total confiscation package. In New Jersey, our confiscation package is much higher than other states. We need to look at the entire tax policy, and begin the process of reducing taxes, selling public property, eliminating programs, and privatizing education, transportation, and everything else.
