It all depends what you are looking to do. My husband I love AC. We go down and walk the pier, hit the outlets and the shops at Caesars. We usually eat at a nice restaurant for dinner and do a little gambling. We will go to a bar or night club to finish off the night.
On paper, yes it seems depressing. Then again, if the accommodations are nice and the weather is OK, you might have a decent time. I recall some Thanksgivings being in the 60s in Northern NJ so you never know.
I echo others - NYC or even Downtown Jersey City might be more your speed
I think Cape May NJ would be perfect for Thanksgiving.Theres alot of places to eat in the area, and also theres alot of tours and horse rides too still all around Cape May.Lots of Christmas lights up,and the weather is still mild to walk all around Cape May.And its really peacefull that time of the year.Good Luck!

I'd spend Thanksgiving in Cape May. It's a lovely town.
Jersey shore is nice from any vantage point. Try a drive down rt 36. Start at Sandy Hook and go down to Deal. Huge hotel on the water, nice board walk, shops restaurants.
Lot of history at Sandy Hook, many stranding stories going back to the 1600s. Penelope Stout, one of the more famous. Henry Hudson explored Raritan bay.
Cape May is a good choice, birding jump off point.
Check out the maurice, bass rivers and the vast sea of grass and reeds, makes for incredible sunrise, sunset images.
Stop at Smithville and Leeds Point, birthplace of the Jersey Devil and outstanding seafood restaurant.
AC is an historic location dropped down in the midst of a 3rd world nation. Closest to visitng a 3rd world country and flaunting your wealth to the deprived natives.
You miss the real essence of South J culture at AC. A land of iron ore, pines that germinate only as a result of forest fires, cedar fences, charcoal, hidden old towns and cemeteries scattered in the pine barrens. Blueberry capital of the world, cranberry production is huge in South J.
Ocean view is pretty much the same as anywhere along NJ's fine sea coast.
The pilgrims actually landed in NJ but the violence in Newark sent them sailing north to Plymouth Rock.

I once got roped into a bachelor party in AC. Being the "old men" (already married) of the group, four of us decided to go early, make camp in Bass River State Forest, and meet the guys for dinner and gambling in Camden-by-the-Sea. After winning $250 at blackjack we let the young ones go off to sow their wild oats at various houses of ill repute and enjoyed some cold Yuengling around a warm fire followed by bacon, eggs, and four wheeling the next morning.

I was about to ask for a citation on this thinking that the "violence" you were referring to was some kind of clash with the Hackensack, but then I got the joke
I'm from the West Coast going to grad school here in Jersey.
I decided I wasn't going home for Thanksgiving this year... yeah
And my girlfriend and I somehow started thinking about going to Atlantic City over Thanksgiving.
I've never been to AC and don't know what it's like. Is this a good idea?
Also, any recommendations/words of advice?
Wow, I would rather go to NYC and see the Parade and I am a gambler! Then go to A.C.
Stay at the Borgata, if you can. You will pay top $$ that weekend. It's not dead at all.. 2nd choice Harrahs. One day visit the shopping center at the Tropicana.. will probably have snow for Holiday season..do not stay at Tropicana , however! Horrible hotel/casino. Great restaurants/shopping. Eat at Carmines, the Palm ...
I wish I had seen your post sooner. The boardwalk is pretty cool and the Marina District where the Borgata and Golden Nugget are is the ONLY area you should stay. They are safe at night. As for the other posters saying it's depressing......definitely not. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
