We're not too familiar with NJ but we're looking into moving somewhere that is convenient for her to drive to/from work and for me to take the NJT into Penn Station.
We're looking to rent for the first year or so then explore buying. What I need is some suggestions on a middle class area that would provide a decent commute for the both of us. Preferably an apt complex that provides parking. Not interested in renting in a private home.
Again I'm not familiar with NJ at all. Thanks in advance for your input.
To be honest, I'd look in Riverdale (the Bronx) or Westchester.
We've looked at Westchester. Problem is the Metro north train takes you to Grand Central Station where I would have to take another train to get to Penn Station. 2 fares. NJT takes me straight there.
Riverdale is beautiful and would be convenient for you. Yonkers is a hop, skip and a jump from Riverdale, and midtown is a subway ride away.
Why do you want to live in NJ? It will make both your commutes unnecessarily complicated and expensive. Never deal with a river crossing if you don't have to.
The problem is, there is a wide river that your wife would have to cross every day. And there aren't that many crossings. So chances are, your wife will be rotting in rush hour traffic every day if she works during the common business hours. You on the other hand can walk from Grand Central to Penn Station or take a train.
I agree with everyone else, NJ to Yonkers is just an awful commute. She would be sitting in traffic for an hour every day just to cross the GWB, not to mention the cost of the tolls.

Well she's commuting in from Queens now and pays a toll both ways.
She mentioned that quite a few of her co-workers commute in from NJ and figured it was worth exploring.

It's about a 20 minute walk. Not something I think I want to do every day. Especially during bad weather.
